School Safety Officers Guideline for AdministrationDaily Work ScheduleDaily work hours are implemented based on building needs. If there is a need to adjust hours, contractually, a five (5) day notice is required to the SSO and BENTE by administration. Unlike any other bargaining unit member, SSO’s work 40 hours a week, 8 hours a day. This includes two 15 minutes paid breaks and a half hour paid lunch. What does this mean? You may call them off their lunch and breaks if there is an emergency situation. This should only occur if you need them for the crisis and should not be for routine assignments. During breaks and/or lunch they are not allowed to leave the building due to possible security needs that may arise. Exceptions may be made ONLY with the administrator’s permission. SSO Work Expectations:Cell phone use (only during breaks or lunch, if possible)Uniform attire, school clothing, professional expectation Portable radio etiquette Student/staff interactions (always professional, use de-escalation techniques)Professional conversations in front of studentsA building schedule should be established to identify the SSO’s breaks and post times.AbsencesA protocol for time off should be implemented based on contractual language and coverage needs. A sick call should be as soon as possible, to allow time to arrange for sub coverage. Professional curtesy should be agreed upon (who to notify, who will be able to place absence in Smart Find as sick call is received) Vacation Days - 5 day notice and must be approved by Administrator (approval shall be granted in times that best meets the district needs) (i.e. not before/after holidays or breaks if possible, this could affect their pay)Personal Days - (contractual – 3 day advanced notice, unless an emergency)Illness CPI must be presented for an illness absence occurring more than 3 days, consecutively;Pattern absences, of more than 3 separate times in a 30 day calendar month can result in a union meeting and request for CPI for up to a year.Unpaid Leave – Unpaid leaves of absence or time off without pay for any reason (other than those stipulated in the CBA) shall not be granted unless recommended by the Division Head, Chief of HCI and approved by the Superintendent of Schools. Smart Find ExpressAny and all absences should be reported in Smart Find Express. If you are having difficulty obtaining coverage through Smart Find and/or have an emergency need, please contact Dan Betancourt directly (953-0087). Note: SSO’s have been told that they can call Dan directly if they have a death in their family or an emergency and he will notify the school.Training School Safety Officers train for two weeks in August (annually). They come with different types of experience and we provide 4-16 hours of on the job training. Please assign a sub accordingly. Refrain from placing a new sub in a difficult assignment in the building, if possible. We lose subs frequently due to the difficult work and better paying jobs. Note: We struggle in recruiting and retaining good, quality subs.Additional RCSD ResourcesMobil One: Shift 8:00am-4:00pm Mobil Two: Shift 9:00am-5:00pmThese are support units for all buildings, but cannot transport of student.
