I will post important class information, such as homework assignments, test/quiz review, project/research paper instructions and sometimes review notes. Please check the website for information on the class, important dates and if you are absent. Should you wish to schedule a conference please call the front office so that they may coordinate a convenient date and time (Doral Academy Prep (305) 591-0020).What will we study in this class?9th grade World History honors is an introductory course to human history around the globe from the fall of the Roman Empire to the present-day War on Terror. Throughout the semester students will become familiar with the development of, and interactions between, peoples, states, civilizations, and empires. Among the topics we will examine are the rise of empires, the evolution of technology and navigation, the evolving conduct of warfare, world religions, and the emergence of intellectual thought. What am I expected to bring to class each day?Lined paperColored Pencils (for maps, drawings and outlining).Pencil SharpenerA minimum of 2 writing instruments. Either pens, pencils or both. If they are pens please use only blue or black. The textbook will be provided for the student to use in class. Online resources will be provided to supplement. How will I be graded in this class?Your grade will consist of class work, homework, projects, quizzes, tests and class participation.GRADING SCALE:100 - 90 = A 89 - 80 = B 79 - 70 = C 69 - 60 = D 59 - 0 = F Grade Breakdown for ClassTests 30%Quizzes 20%Projects 25%Class work/HW 15%Participation 10%My goal is to give a total of 8 tests this year. Each grading period will have two tests. We will also be having a baseline assessment (pre-test in the beginning of the year) This will be graded based on completion and following guidelines and procedure. This will not be a performance based assessment.Quizzes will be given two times per grading period. Sometimes they will be announced but I also reserve the right to give pop quizzes to make sure that students are taking care of their academic responsibilities.Projects will be assessed in a variety of ways. They can be research papers (APA format will be taught in class), group projects (This could vary from pairing students together, all the way to the entire class working on the same project collaboratively) and class presentations.Class work is assignments that are completed in class that are not given the designation of test, quiz or project.Homework will be based on completing assignments at home that relate to either information that has been already been gone over in class or it can also be related to something that is going to be covered in the future.Participation involves being prepared for class, taking notes, paying attention during lectures, and working on in class assignments/activities. The way I grade participation is as follows: Students are given 4 participation points (2 for paying attention and 2 for general participation) at the start of every class. Students will have points deducted whenever they are not participating (failure to take notes or work on activities/class work, talking or sleeping during lectures, and not being prepared for class). The final participation grade will be based off the amount of points they accumulated throughout the semester. Students who have an excused absent will still receive the 4 participation points for the day they were absent. Please Note: If you are absent, it is YOUR RESPONSIBILITY to complete make-up assignments in a reasonable amount of time (average of 1 day for each day missed, if absence is excused). Consequences for Misbehavior: 1. Verbal Warning 2. Written Warning and/or Parent contact 3. Detention and/or Parent contact 4. Office referral and Parent/ teacher meeting.Mr. Sirven’s Course SyllabusName: ______________________________________________ Period: _______________After reading Mr. Sirven’s course syllabus, including policies and expectations, it is the responsibility of the student to keep this syllabus in his/her binder all year.I have read Mr. Sirven’s syllabus for the 2019-2020 school year and I will abide by his policies and expectations.
