TEACHER ASSISTANT JOB DESCRIPTION

Purpose: Under the supervision of the Teacher, the Teacher Assistant will assist in the supervision and care of children ages 6 weeks to 12

years of age.

Responsibilities:

1. Welcome every person coming into the center or leaving center.

2. To interact with the children and to encourage their involvement in activities.

3. Help to prepare an environment that is orderly, clean and appealing and permits the child to grow and to discover.

4. To establish and continue good communication with parents through conferences and on a daily informal basis.

5. To observe, record and report important individual and group behavior.

6. To use appropriate and positive discipline.

7. To be present at monthly staff meetings. (1st Saturday of each month)

8. Assist in preparing materials required in the curriculum.

9. Assists the teacher to implement lesson plans to nurture and stimulate appropriate development of the children in there care.

10. Help to order new equipment and supplies; to prepare materials needed in the curriculum.

11. Console upset children.

12. Serve children their snacks and meals.

13. May wash, dry, fold and store bed linens, blankets, etc.

14. Help children to develop habits of caring for their own clothing and picking up and putting away items.

15. Supervises health and safety need of children on and off grounds, including field trips.

16. Keeps classroom neat and orderly.

20. Supports and implements short and long term goals in the classroom.

21. Will perform other duties as assigned by director or person in charge.

Reporting Relationships:

Reports to the Director, Administrative Assistant, and Person In Charge.

Limits of Authority:

Must have prior approval to: transfer child to another class; remove a staff person; order new equipment; release child to unauthorized person; take time off; refer parent outside resources; change shift hours; change room arrangement; notify parents about sick child; change curriculum for program; and leave the building with a child.

Education/Experience

• High School Diploma

• Experience providing care to infants/toddlers or pre-school children. (A Teacher Assistant working with infants must take infant first aid/CPR, SID and shaken baby syndrome courses.)

Requirements:

1. Evidence of emotional maturity and stability.

2. Evidence of sufficient security and judgment to handle crisis.

3. Physical stamina.

4. Ability to supervise aides and other personnel.

5. Ability to relate joyfully and sensitively to children

6. Handle the responsibilities and routine stress often associated with providing childcare services.

7. Lift 30 pounds from the floor to a waist-high table when necessary.

8. Reach a child 20 to 30 feet away within 30 seconds without endangering the staff person’s health.

9. Crouch to a child’s height, maintain eye contact at the child’s level, sit on the floor and stand tall enough to reach children on the

highest piece of equipment

10. Must obtain 15 clock hours annually. (pre-service training, first aid/CPR, Shaken Baby syndrome, and SID not included in these

11. hours)

12. Must take pre-service training, CPR/first aid, shaken baby syndrome, SID courses within 30 days after hire date.

Time Commitment:

20-40 hours a week
