Course Description:

Course Prerequisites:

A.P. Environmental Science is open to students who have taken at least one year of laboratory science.

Course Overview:

AP Environmental Science is designed to prepare students for the College Board AP Environmental Science Exam. The course adheres to the objectives set forth in the course description for A.P. Environmental Science according to the College Board, which states that AP Environmental is “designed to be the equivalent of a one-semester, introductory college course in environmental science.” Emphasis is placed on “the scientific principles, concepts, and methodologies required to understand the interrelationships of the natural world to identify and analyze environmental problems both natural and human-made, to evaluate the risks associated with there problems, and to examine alternative solutions for resolving and preventing them.”

In this course you will have the opportunity to earn college credit, be exposed to college level work and expectations, but more importantly you will receive knowledge of the major environmental issues (and their solutions) in the world today. With this knowledge you will become an informed citizen on this planet and be able to make decisions in your college life, your career and in your personal life that will impact the state and well being of yourself, your immediate community and the world as a whole. It is our responsibility to empower ourselves with knowledge so that we may live better and more sustainable lives in this world.

You will be expected to work hard in this class. There will be group work, projects, reading, writing, data interpretation, and graph making. All of this will culminate in the AP Exam to be taken in May. In college you will be expected to be self-motivated and organized. Strong time management skills are a necessity to graduation. I will give you much support and instruction on building these and other college skills. If you work hard and are open to this experience YOU WILL be better prepared for college, which is a gateway to a better life.

Grading Policy:

All grades will be posted and updated regularly on Gradebook. I will not post grades in class, nor will I show you your Gradebook account during class. It is your responsibility to check Gradebook regularly and stay aware of your grades and missing work. All homework, announcements, downloads and other important information for my classes can be found at IL/RooseveltHighSchool/Kuhagen. If you have questions or need help with these websites see me during the conference times listed at the top of the syllabus.

D = %68 - %75

F = %67 or below

MAKE-UP WORK:

If you are absent from class it is your responsibility to get the work and notes for that day (s). Check your Gradebook account, the “old handouts” area, IL/RooseveltHighSchool/Kuhagen and ask your classmates to get up to date with the rest of the class. Ask your instructor for help only after you have checked these other sources. IF SOMEONE IS KIND ENOUGH TO LEND YOU THEIR NOTES…RESPECT AND HONOR THAT BY NOT LOOSING THEM AND RETURNING THEM QUICKLY!! (

This is a college level course. In college there is no such thing as “excused and unexcused absence”. If you miss the work, you simply miss the work and your grade suffers, this includes exams. If you know in advanced you will miss an important project deadline or if you have a solid medical / parental excuse for having missed important deadlines you must see me during the conference time to resolve the matter.

If you are absent for a quiz, test or other in class activity, you may make that work up during a tutoring time. See the teacherweb site for the schedule of tutoring times. There are some lab activities that will not be able to be made up.

Late Assignment Acceptance Policy:

All late assignments will receive an automatic grade of “D” based on effort and accuracy, unless accompanied by an excused note written by a parent or guardian.

Academic Misconduct:

Students are encouraged to work together on homework and assigned activities. Everyone is expected to do his or her share of group work.

Any student found to be cheating on individual assignments / quizzes / tests will receive an automatic zero. I will not call you on it in class, but you will simply receive a zero on the paper (or in Gradebook) with a note that says “cheating”. You will not be allowed to make up this work. No talking is allowed during exams/ tests as this could be interpreted as cheating and it distracts other classmates.

Please come and talk to me about any problems that you may be having in this class. Both you and I are responsible for your success and learning in this class.

Although this is a college level course, I understand that you are not in college yet and I am going to support you in building these skills. Please come and talk to me about any problems that you may be having in this class. Do not be afraid to get help with reading or math skills, now is the time to do it! Please help your classmates…we are in this together. Both you and I are responsible for your success and learning in this class.
