Any form of scholastic dishonesty is an affront to the pursuit of knowledge and jeopardizes the quality of the degree awarded to all graduates of UTEP. Any student who commits an act of scholastic dishonesty is subject to discipline. Scholastic dishonesty includes, but is not limited to: cheating, plagiarism, collusion [making plans to cheat with another], the submission for credit of any work or materials that are not attributable in whole or in part to another person, taking an examination for another person, any act designed to give unfair advantage to a student or the attempt to commit such acts.? Proven violations of the detailed regulations, as printed in the Handbook of Operating Procedures (HOP) and available in the Office of the Dean of Students, may result in sanctions ranging from disciplinary probation, to failing grades on the work in question, to failing grades in the course, to suspension or dismissal among others.Students with Disabilities statement: If you have or believe you have a disability, you may wish to self-identify. You can do so by providing documentation to the Center for Accommodations and Support Services (CASS) located in Union E Room 106. Students who have been designated as having a disability must reactivate their standing with CASS on a yearly basis. Failure to report to this office will place a student on the inactive list and nullify benefits received. If you have a condition which may affect your ability to exit safely from the premises in an emergency or which may cause an emergency during class, you are encouraged to discuss this in confidence with the instructor and/or the director of CASS. You may call 919-747-5148 for general information about the Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA). Student Conduct and Discipline: All students are expected and required to obey the law and to comply with Regent, Rules, and Regulations () with system and University rules, with directives issued by an administrative official in the course of his or her authorized duties and to observe the standards of conduct appropriate for the university.Equal Opportunity: All students regardless of gender, age, class, race, religion, physical disability, sexual orientation, etc., shall have equal opportunity without harassment in this course. Any problems with or questions related to this can be discussed confidentially with the instructorAttendance Policy:??Even though this is a Hybrid Course, the class is set up, proactively, as a fully online, conditionally asynchronous class. Every week we will be scheduled to meet on Zoom for the 1st hour of class (thus if your class is for Tuesday at 8:30 a.m., we will meet using Zoom every class week from 8:30-9:30 (if we actually meet face to face, there will be no Zoom session that week). I have 4 sections of this course, so if you miss a Zoom session you can attend one of the other sessions (Wed 5:30, Thu 8:30, Thu 12:00). You are expected to attend one of the online sessions for that week. If you fail to attend, you will do more work. That said, the Discussion Questions and the PowerPoint Lectures will serve as your attendance marker. I will run the report every week and if the report indicates you did not access the PowerPoint Lecture for that week before class (whether you attended or not), you will lose half your attendance points. (5 points)For 8 of the 10 weeks that we do not meet face to face, you will do the discussion question. Each of those discussion questions are worth 10 points (if you viewed the PowerPoints before class) and your ability to do a good job on them will depend on you having engaged with the Power Point lecture beforehand. For those attending the class, you will not know what the discussion question is until you attend class (i.e. you’ll get a fairly easy exit ticket question), and each class will have a different discussion question. Once class is over, you will have exactly 1 hour to respond to the question. Those who choose not to attend class online will get more difficult discussion questions than for those who do attend class. Those will already be set up and viewable to you. I am exacting on what I expect in terms of responses for these questions, so if you take them lightly, you will not have a good grade for the discussion. When we meet on Zoom, I will take attendance and expect cameras to be on. Those who attend and participate regularly will get bonus consideration for their participation. I also expect you to be on time. If there is a technical problem on my end, that is not your problem btwFor 4 of the 5 weeks we are scheduled to meet face to face, there are also discussion questions. The procedure is different for those weeks. If you come and attend the whole class period (no ducking out early) you will NOT have to do the discussion for that week (i.e. you get your points for showing up). The discussions for those weeks will be worth 25 points rather than 10 points btw. If you cannot come to class though, you will do those discussions. If there is a lockdown or cancellation on Week 2, 5, 8 or 12 then we will conduct class online like the other weeks.Audio PowerPoint Lectures: Every Class week has a PowerPoint Lecture. All the lectures will be open to you from the first day of class. You are expected to have viewed the entire PowerPoint lecture for that week before we meet for class online. The Lectures are tracked, so if you do not view the lecture before the scheduled class meeting, I will know, and you will lose half of the week’s attendance points. This applies to those who choose not to attend the Zoom session that week as well. That said, I expect discussions to be completed on time. If you miss three discussions, you will be dropped from the class. No exceptions unless you present a fully documented medical reason. In that case if it is early in the semester, you will be dropped. If it is late in the semester (i.e. after Week 9) you will be given an incomplete. There is no situation where you will be allowed to pass the class without having completed all the work requirements. BTW If you have carefully looked at BlackBoard, you will have noticed that you have work every week. Cellular Phones and Laptops at Face to Face Meetings:No cellular phones are permitted to be on audible ringtone during F2F class. If a situation arises that requires you to keep tabs with a cellular phone, you can place it on your table but you must keep it in silent mode or on vibrate. If I catch you texting during class without permission, you will receive one warning. If I catch you a second time, you will be asked to leave. If we have a repeat incident afterwards you will be dropped form the class as you obviously lack the maturity necessary for the profession. Laptops or tablets will be required for our 4 F2F class meetings. If you are caught using a laptop for anything either than taking notes or doing work that pertains to the current work we are doing in social studies class, you will be asked to leave. If you are asked to leave during class, you will receive a zero for whichever assignment that is given that day.
