To: Parents of Spanish 3-4 Students

Your student is currently enrolling for next year’s classes. We want to inform you of opportunities they have available by continuing in their Spanish studies with Spanish 5-6 (regular or honors). By enrolling in Spanish next year, your student has the opportunity to earn college credit with Rio Salado Community College. Please acknowledge with your signature below that your student has shared with you the information concerning dual enrollment in his/her Desert Vista Foreign language class and indicate your child’s plan for next year.

By participating in the dual enrollment program, your student will:

• Earn college credit for his/her high school Spanish class

• Save money for college credit:

o Pay $71 per credit hour this year as opposed to much higher university fees when he/she enrolls at a college or university. (Currently the average tuition for Arizona state university fees is approximately $235-250 per credit hour).

o Textbooks are provided by the high school, whereas college students must purchase textbooks that run between $75 and $200 each.

• Save time in college: Almost all college degrees require 2 – 4 semesters of a foreign language. This language requirement can be completed in high school by enrolling in our dual enrollment program.

• Finish college faster: It is possible to finish in three to three and one-half years.

• Obtain high class standing so your student can enroll earlier each semester and register for desired classes before most classmates.

• Have the opportunity to travel to Spain: We take students to Alicante, Spain every summer to live with host families and attend classes there where they can earn more college credits. They spend three weeks studying and travelling around the country.

Here are the classes our program offers for college credit:

• (Honors or) Spanish 5-6 Fall = SPA 111 = 4 college credits

• Spring = SPA 201 = 4 college credits

• (Honors or) Spanish 7-8 Fall = SPA 225 = 3 college credits

• Spring = SPA 202* = 4 college credits

• AP Spanish Language and Culture Fall = SPA 235 = 3 college credits

• Spring = SPA 202* = 4 college credits

*(Completing SPA 202 fulfills the Foreign Language requirement for university students attending college in-state.)

• Honors Spanish 9-10 Fall = SPA 235 = 3 college credits

• Spring = SPH 245 = 3 college credits (in Humanities)

For further information or help please contact your student’s foreign language teacher or email the Foreign Language Department Chair, Maggie Fountain, at mfountain@tuhsd.k12.az.us or on Rio Salado’s site riosalado.edu/dual
