FROM

THE

PRESIDENT

Greetings to all!

As we continue to adapt to the ongoing circumstances of COVID in our personal lives, whether it¡¯s traveling

globally or just running a local errand, OLLI has answered the call for change. This past semester, we welcomed

yet another way to participate with your fellow members: the hybrid option.

The value of the hybrid model is evident. For the courses that offer this option, participants can either remain at

a comfortable location of their choosing or meet at an OLLI campus with their fellow classmates. Also evident is

the increased complexity of hosting this mixed mode. In order to implement this change, an investment in both

the camera and audio systems in classroom technology became necessary.

As part of this major effort, I wish to thank the OLLI staff along with all our volunteer leaders, who organize

and submit topics each semester to enrich our catalog offerings. As a result of these collective works over the

pandemic period, OLLI membership and course offerings have stabilized. We owe our thanks to you, our valued

members, for continuing to support OLLI both by staying active and giving through your generous donations.

In closing, I invite you to review our new fall 2022 catalog, which was designed to offer a variety of options for

your enjoyment!

Lloyd Kern, Council President

FROM

THE

DIRECTOR

Dear Returning and New OLLI members.

Welcome to the Fall 2022 semester at OLLI. We are very pleased to present this robust selection of courses

from our amazing volunteer instructors. Every year, I am dumbfounded by the generosity of so many talented

and bright people who choose to support our program through offering high-caliber courses to you and all our

members. Our instructors deserve so much appreciation from all of us. I know they do it because they love it.

Just as you attend classes because you love to learn. What a wonderful, mutual arrangement we have in the

OLLI program. It is truly a gem, of which I am so proud to be a part.

Somehow, we managed to survive a global pandemic, and continue providing courses, in spite of having to

move our entire program online, for two years. I want to thank my amazing staff, Betsy Reese and Kate Hays, for

making this possible. Their skills are exceptional, they love what they do, and they are the reason we¡¯ve made it

this far and can now offer a new OLLI for the 22nd century: in-person, online and hybrid.

If you care about the program, and wish to see it continue in the future, for you and your fellow students, as well

as future students, please consider making a donation at the time you pay your membership fee. This year, we

will be upgrading the technology in our classrooms, to make hybrid classes a reality for OLLI -- your donations

will make this possible.

Hybrid classes not only require resources to purchase new technology, they also require classroom support. If

any of you are comfortable with technology and would be willing to be a classroom assistant either for a hybrid

or online class, please email us at olli@temple.edu, and let us know of your interest. We will get back to you to

discuss.

Lastly, I want to thank those of you who stuck with us, either as members during the pandemic, or as donors ¨C

yes, many of you who did not take classes, still decided to donate to OLLI, in your absence. We could not have

made it through without your dedication and support. Thank you so much.

With Warm Regards,

Adam Brunner, Director

ABOUT

OLLI

AT

TEMPLE

Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Temple University is an extraordinary educational

environment serving people 50 years and older. We offer courses within Temple¡¯s Center City, Ambler,

and Main campuses and is a membership-based organization.

Members represent a broad spectrum of lifestyles, professions, and interests. All of the instructors

at OLLI at Temple are also members and the number of colleges and universities, academic degrees,

honors, and fields of study associated with our instructors assures a quality learning experience

OLLI courses are unique because they are designed to promote the joy of learning without the pressure

of traditional academic requirements such as tests or grades. OLLI also offers trips, social events, free

public lectures, and an in-house library.

For people who want to keep on learning, make new friends, and continue ¡°the good life¡±, OLLI at Temple

is the place to be.

A BRIEF HISTORY

OLLI was organized in 1975 and was originally known as Association of Retired Professionals (ARP).

There were 85 founding members and 34 couruses in the fall of 1976. At that time, only two similar

programs existed in the United States. In 1998, the name changed to Temple Association for Retired

Professionals (TARP), and later to Temple Association for Retired Persons.

In 2007, TARP received a grant from the Bernard Osher Foundation, and changed its name to the Osher

Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI) at Temple University. We are one in a network of 125 OLLI programs in

the nation. As more adult programs become available in the coming years, we hope to be at the leading

edge.

OLLI¡¯S MISSION

The Osher Lifelong Learning Institute at Temple University is a university led and member supported

organization that provides a wide array of educational and experiential opportunities to a diverse group

of people, 50 years of age and older, who learn, teach and discover together.
