Kevin RodriguezRWS 1301Community Problem ReportUniversity of Texas at El PasoAbstractIn this community problem report, the issue of Gun control will be explained. Gun control has been an issue around the whole globe, especially in the United States of America. Anti-Gun believers have done some quite job in order to put a point across about the danger of possession of firearms. By building organizations and making advertisements, these people have made politicians thin twice about gun control laws. In the other hand, those who are gun lovers explain the benefits firearms have given to them. These supporters also believe in the constitution and protect the amendments and the history of the United States. I will give my personal believe in what should happen base on this nationwide problem. Community Problem Report-Gun ControlThroughout time in the United States, there have been issues involving gun control. Gun control has been a big part of America’s history. It brought the American people freedom and many more rights. In today’s society, residents debate how gun control is enforced in the nation. Throughout this report elements regarding gun control will be explained, the history on gun control and court cases, anti-gun organizations and the 2nd amendment.Guns have been a major element for the freedom of the people in the United States. Fights have been fought; wars have been won, thanks to firearms. Franklin D. Roosevelt wanted an Act that taxed the manufacture of guns. (Washington Post, 2012) This was the first type of gun control. Later on, gun control gets more enforced due to the killings of presidents. Many court cases regarding gun control took place. For example, District of Columbia vs. Heller focused that the 2nd amendment protects an individual’s right to bear arms for self-defense. (Blocher J, 2014) Many other cases took place regarding if the right to bear arms was essential to the life of an American Citizen. American citizens around the nation have witnessed a lot of massacres that have happened in the United States. Since 1949 to present date, there has been 25 deadliest single day shootings in the U.S. (CNN Library, 2014) The deadliest shooting of all was in Virginia where 32 people were killed and others were wounded. Because of these bloody events, organizations such as “Mothers Demand Action for Gun Sense in America” and citizens around the nation demand enforcement towards gun control. (Mothers Demand Action, n.d.) These people want a change in the laws towards possessing a firearm. The majority of the members of the organizations that oppose gun control are members that have lost loved ones in public shootings around the U.S. These organizations have created protests trying to get into politicians hearts, in other words these people are using pathos in their advertisements to grasp politicians. 4229100-937260Figure 1: this advertisement of “Moms Demand Action” it shows how it conveys pathos throughout the picture. 00Figure 1: this advertisement of “Moms Demand Action” it shows how it conveys pathos throughout the picture. On the other side of this debate there are those who are in favor of guns. Most of these people are those who defend the right to bear arms, which is the 2nd amendment in our constitution. An organization called National Rifle Association (NRA) is a group of people defending history’s patriots and the 2nd amendment. (NRA, n.d.) The 2nd amendment has opened up many opportunities for students to earn scholarships and attend their dream school. These students have given speeches explaining how if laws were enforced, they wouldn’t of had the opportunity to go to the school they want because of financial problems.(James Madison, 2013) The 2nd amendment has given many opportunities to many people throughout the United States. People that are against anti-gun don’t want any changes towards the amendment. Many of these supporters state, “Guns aren’t the problem, the person handling the gun is.” This is the response that gun lovers have towards the gun shootings that has happened throughout time. In my opinion, I believe guns shouldn’t be forbidden in the United States, but I do think that the process of getting a license and a firearm should be harder and longer. I believe that the problem isn’t the guns; the problem is the person who is controlling it. Guns have caused a lot of damage to families and citizens around the whole nation, but guns have given students the opportunity of attending a school they can’t afford. Guns were a big part in given us freedom and I do not think they should be banned. Many arguments have risen between these two sides regarding gun control. Laws have been enforced when it comes to obtaining a license for purchasing a gun. This has been an issue for a long time and there really hasn’t been a change towards the amendment. Because of the history and court cases, anti-gun people, and the 2nd amendment, this has been a nation wide issue. ReferencesBLOCHER, J. (2014). Gun Rights Talk.
