Can only take once in middle school.Spanish 1A has limited seats. There will be a criteria for the limited seats. If your child is a strong ELA student, consider Spanish 1 in 8th grade. Spanish 1A and 1B breaks the curriculum of Spanish 1 in 2 years instead of 1 year for Spanish 1.This is your resource guide for the Course Selection Process. Please make certain to reference this information as you complete your course requests in SKYWARD for next school year. The Parents/Students tab on the FBISD website is also a valuable resource to assist you with this process. Students will also be sent a Microsoft Form (Rising 7th Grade Course Selection Form)to complete that must match EXACTLY what they’ve entered into SKYWARD. This will replace the paper version of the course selection sheet that is normally ‘turned in’ to the Counseling Office.Ericka.Burr@Schoology Course Access CodeFC4N-TV6R-KWGRBRising 7th Grade Course Selection FormNotes:Notes:Fine Arts3333750206502ArtMIDDLE SCHOOL VISUAL ARTS CURRICULUM (6-8)Art classes within the middle grades expand on the elementary foundation in understanding and skills in the visual arts in an exploratory manner consistent with the middle school philosophy. Our Baines Beginning Band is divided into individual instrument classes include the woodwind, brass, and the percussion families of instruments.Instruments of the Beginning Band:FluteOboe/BassoonClarinetSaxophoneFrench HornTrumpetTrombonePercussionEach of our beginning classes are homogeneous classes. Every instrument has its own individual class. We teach our band students how to read music, how to read rhythms, and how to play their chosen instruments. Our classes are fun and engaging but also require classroom focus in order for our band students to learn everything they will need to be successful band students! Throughout the school year we attend several trips including party socials at The Main Event, performances of The Houston Symphony at Jones Hall, and the Music Across Texas Festival where our students have the opportunity to earn awards and trophies! We are so excited to continue a wonderful tradition of excellence in our band program in the coming Fall!!If your child is interested in band he or she will need to sign up for band as their 1st choice on their course selection sheet and one of the band directors will get in touch with you regarding our Virtual Beginning Band Orientation, our virtual instrument interviews and instrument selection for the Baines Beginning Band for the upcoming year.We look forward to seeing you!! Thank you so much,Mark Rios and Christopher SongChoirChoir is a great class to take if you love music and love to sing. Most people don’t think they can sing very well, but if you love music, Mrs. Clark and Mr. Woodson will teach you how to sing and read music. The best part is that you do not have to sing by yourself alone. You get to sing with a lot of other people who also like music and want to learn how to sing better. Choir classes are divided into separate boys’ and girls’ classes based on voice type since all our voices are very different. As you learn how to sing with the whole group, you will sing a variety of types and styles of music and participate in concerts, contests, festivals, parties and trips throughout the year. Choir students are also eligible to audition for the joint school musical production put on by the Choir and Theatre Departments. The friends you make in Choir will become like your family because so many kids choose to stay together in choir all through MS and even into HS.Here are some quotes from some of our current choir kids about choir:“Choir is an environment where you can build up self-confidence” - Jude Joe Binu, 7th Grade“We sometimes play games: singing games, team-building games, and more!” - Ashton Foy, 7th Grade“You can have field trips, and you can even have a trip to Six Flags Fiesta Texas” - Hanna Mathew, 6th Grade“You get to participate in fun contests, concerts, and the musical.” - Maggie Bishop, 8th Grade“You will learn something new every day and when you are feeling down, you canalways look forward to this class,” - Kallin Wheatley, 7th Grade“It can be intimidating transitioning to middle school, but choir makes it so easy.” - Mirabel Manoj, 6th Grade“You can create a special bond with the peers in your class, and the directors are alwaysthere for you.” - Sophia Oliveri, 8th Grade“We get to unite and sing together, and we have a big choir family where you can have fun and be yourself.” - Karli Nimmo, 7th Grade“A great way to meet new friends” - Vincent Verano, 8th Grade“You don’t have to be a good singer to join because in the process, you will learn to be better at it. While you’re at it, you get to make some unforgettable memories with your choir family.” - Estrella Perez-Contreras, 8th GradeOrchestraTheaterTheatre Arts I —Students are introduced to a variety of speaking situations and a basic understanding of the theatre. AVID not only makes the college dream accessible to traditionally underserved students, it also helps schools meet state accountability measures. It's the American Dream. College may not be for every student, but every student should have the opportunity to attend a four-year college. It's the right thing to do. Who can argue with creating greater equity for thousands of students who, until now, have not had access to academically challenging classes? It's the economy. We need an educated workforce and can't afford to leave anyone behind. Business supports AVID because it ensures that more students are trained to think critically, overcome obstacles, and work in teams.AVID challenges students to work hard and always do their best in all subject areas. In order to improve students’ success rates, AVID requires members to participate in challenging tasks.AVID Students must:Join the AVID elective classEnroll in a Pre-AP class (supported by in -class AVID tutorial sessions)Maintain grade requirement in all classesKeep an organized binder with dividers for each subject and a plannerTake Focused Notes in ALL classesMaintain good citizenship in and out of schoolParticipate in all AVID activities, such as fundraisers, field trips, community service, etc.Need More Information?Navigate to the AVID webpage at Or E-mail the AVID TeamDeannea Holman Coordinator/Elective Teacher deannea.holman@Gladys Brown Elective TeacherGladys.brown@Pamela Juniel, AVID Counselor pamela.juniel@Maria Brockie, AVID Counselor maria.brockie@Dr. Joey Washington Associate Principal AVID Administratorjoey.washington@Baines Middle SchoolCelebrating Excellence in Academics, Athletics, and the ArtsElizabeth Williams, Principal 9000 Sienna Ranch Road Missouri City, TX 7745969279672064School wide AVIDKey Components of AVIDStudent Success SkillsOrganization using agendas, organizational tools, goal setting, note-taking strategiesEmphasis on writing to learn, inquiry, collaboration, organization, and reading to learn in all areasPartnerships within classroom, grade levels, AVID school sites, feeder patterns, families, and communityProgram BenefitsDevelop confidenceTake accountability for learning and growingAttain/improve organizational skillslMaximize critical thinking abilities/opportunitiesField trips to major/local universitiesGuest SpeakersAVID T-shirtParents’ Night and AVID showcaseFun in-class/research projectsInterview teachers about their college experiencesCollege student tutorials in-schoolAVID is not just another program….at its heart, AVID is a philosophy.Hold students accountable to the highest standards, provide academic and social support and they will rise to the challenge.AVID APPLICATION PROCESSInterested students can access an online application at: Domain/131Deadline to apply is:-Monday, March 1, 2021 for current 6th and 7th graders.-Friday, April 9, 2021 for incoming 6th graders. All applications will be reviewed by the AVID site team.Students will be scheduled an interview.Students will be selected for final placement and parents will be notified.**Please note that chosen students will have the course selections adjusted for placement. Now that you have viewed a few electives:What are some of your interest? What would you like to explore?Want to try something new?Write your thoughts:5125978-35315Counseling THINK TANKLanguages3495675206527Spanish 1ACredits: .5Level: On levelPrerequisites: NoneThis course counts for high school credit and toward the HSGPA and class rank. PreApThis course is for students who are highly motivated and interested in a rigorous math program. Students are provided opportunities for extension and application of content and processes. This course will help prepare students to take Pre-AP Algebra I in 8th grade.SCIENCEDifference between On-level and Pre-AP ScienceIn the Pre-AP classes, we give the information to the kids differently and they demonstrate their knowledge in ways different from the on-level kids. The content is the same. The way we teach/assess is different.ENGLISH & LANGUAGE ARTS (ELA)English Language Arts On-Level— Grade 7 Students will apply earlier TEKS strands of developing and sustaining foundational skills, comprehension, response, multiple genres, author’s purpose and craft, composition, and inquiry with greater depth in increasingly complex texts as they become self-directed, critical learners who work collaboratively and independently to develop and use metacognitive skills. The strands are integrated and progressive so students think critically as readers and writers as they adapt to the ever-evolving nature of language and literacy. The overarching theme in English Language Arts is the study, analysis, and application of the intentional decisions authors make as they design an experience for an audience. Students will engage in academic discourse, writing, and reading on a daily basis with opportunities for cross-curricular content, close reading routines, independent, self-selected reading, and diverse texts.English Language Arts Pre-AP — Grade 7 This course focuses on the same strands as English Language Arts, Grade 7 (see above), but also emphasizes advanced reading and analytical reasoning skills to prepare students for the Pre-Advanced Placement program in high school. Students are expected to read during the summer as well as outside of class during the school year.SOCIAL STUDIESSocial Studies Pre-AP vs. On-Level CoursesWhat are the Different Courses in Social Studies?7th Grade- Texas HistoryWhat are the differences in On-Level and Pre-AP Courses? There are many differences in On-Level and Pre-AP Courses. For example, Pre-AP assessments included in-depth essay responses and challenging primary source analysis in order to prepare the student for AP courses in high school.On-Level Courses give students a well-rounded education in the course listed above. Taking an On-Level Social Studies course will fully prepared students for the 8th Grade STAAR test and future high school courses.Pre-AP courses take the course one step further! They challenge students to be more analytical in the content and build an evidence-based opinion on life today and the past.Students will participate in more discussions and debates along with deeper understanding projects and assessments. How will I know if I or my child will be a good fit for Pre-AP courses?Think to yourself: What is my educational goal in high school? If your response is to take honors/AP courses, then Pre-AP courses are the right choice for you! Pushing yourself now will be beneficial in high school and college!Pre-AP courses are best fit for students that fit the following qualities:PassionateIf you have any questions about Social Studies, please email Jessica Kelm at Jessica.kelm@.I am happy to help! ?OrganizedCollaborativeFocusedGood attendanceRESOURCES:To view the videos please visit the Baines Website and Schoology Page FBISD Video for Course selection online in Skyward directions for grades 6 and 7: School Course Selection Guide: Grade Microsoft Course Selection Form---Must match SkywardRising 7th Grade Course Selection Form2021-2022 BAINES MIDDLE SCHOOLWorksheet ONLYCOURSE REQUEST WORKSHEET - GRADE 7This will NOT be turned in.Student’s Name:Student's I.D.
