How do I use TI-Nspire documents in my classroom?

TI-Nspire documents that will accompany the Prentice Hall Algebra 1, Geometry and Algebra 2 c2011 textbooks will supplement the textbook content by providing an alternative way to see the Math using technology. TI-Nspire technology provides the flexibility to meet different classroom and curriculum needs. With TI-Nspire, teachers can help students form their own knowledge by involving the student in the exploration of mathematical concepts. Some of the common classroom scenarios are outlined below:

• TI-Nspire activities can be sent to the student handheld, so they can interact with dynamic problems that tie directly to each lesson in the textbook. These activities can be used as homework assignments, to help students catch up on missed classes, supplemental learning for students who didn’t understand certain concepts or for students who lag behind.

• The portable nature of the TI-Nspire allows the students use TI-Nspire to explore concepts anytime, anywhere. Waiting for the bus, on a break or in the cafeteria: TI-Nspire provides an opportunity for students to interact with the math, to see the transformations and to come to their own conclusions.

• Teachers can project the TI-Nspire Teacher Edition software on their computer to the class and demonstrate difficult to teach Math concepts.

• TI-Nspire activities can be used to enable group discussion and strengthen peer-peer learning that allows for entire class participation.

• Improve classroom management and reclaim teaching time by using these dynamic activities for remediation, as a refresher before a lesson or quiz or at the start of a class period (E.g. “Introduction to Matrices” before students begin “Adding and Subtracting Matrices”), as a supplement to handheld manipulatives such as Algebra Tiles. Handheld manipulatives are now available digitally through TI-Nspire hence organization is much easier.

• TI-Nspire handheld technology along with the documents created to work with the Pearson textbooks can save computer lab time and provide the teacher the flexibility to provide same instruction in the classroom.

• Parents can use the TI-Nspire files to quickly "brush-up on" or "learn" the math necessary to interact with their children.

• Using Connect-to-Class or TI-Nspire Navigator, TI-Nspire files can be sent to the entire class and results collected within minutes to assess student understanding.

• Quiz and Test Prep documents can help students practice concepts that they have learned and prepare for upcoming tests on their own time or used by teachers to test student understanding in the classroom.

Navigation tips for using TI-Nspire (.tns) documents:

Once you download the TI-Nspire documents from this CD to your computer you can use the TI-Nspire Teacher Edition software to open and explore these documents. All of these documents are best viewed in the handheld view. Later, these can also be sent to the student handheld using Connectivity (link) software. Some tips to keep in mind to help you navigate these documents:

• To demonstrate to class, the tns files are best viewed in the TI-Smartview emulator view in your Teacher Edition software. To switch to this view click on the “TI-SmartView” tab at the bottom left corner.

• Just above the emulator window, click on the drop down and choose “Handheld + SideScreen” option to bring up the entire Emulator.

• You can now use your computer keyboard or the keys on the emulator to drive the software/handheld.

• To display next page: Press ctrl ► on your keypad.

• To display previous page: Press ctrl ◄ on your keypad.

• To display page sorter view: Press ctrl ▲ on your keypad.

• To switch between applications on a split page use ctrl→ tab on your device keypad. In your computer software just move your mouse cursor to the area and click to highlight.

• As you or the students explore the TI-Nspire documents, unintentional changes to the document will not be saved automatically. If you wish to save your changes press ctrl “S”.

• The above commands may work slightly different on the Mac®. Use the ‘command’ key instead of ‘ctrl’ key.
