JLA INTRO TO SOCIAL STUDIESDear Parents/Guardians,My name is William Reeve and I will be your student’s Social Studies Teacher. Your student’s educational welfare and safety will be my priority. Like you I am a parent. I have two children and would want assurance that my children are being taught in accordance with the state guidelines.I am a 20-year Army veteran who was also an Army Brat. I went to 5 elementary schools, one middle school and two high schools. In those 20 years in the Army four of those years as an instructor at Ft Sam Houston. I hold a Composite Social Studies teaching certification for the State of Texas with a Master’s Degree in Education and Bachelor Degrees in History and Food Service Management. As part of my Master’s program I completed my student teaching at Byron P. Steele HS teaching Government and Economics. Last year was my first year here at JLA with 7 years of substitute teaching within the SCUCISD at Clemens and Steele high schools.Parents/Guardians, the school has a policy that there will be no cellphone use in the classroom for the purposes of texting (this includes Snapchat and other forms of media), receiving or making phone calls. Your student will not use their phone during lectures or have it during testing. If you must reach our student, please contact the front desk and the receptionist will let us know. Please do not interrupt class time with phone calls or text messages.In the end, your goal and mine is to ensure the successful completion of their courses at the end of the semester with the ultimate goal of graduation. Ed.(210) 651-4080wreeve@GRADING POLICY: TESTS- 40%, QUIZES/DAILEY ASSIGNMENTS- 60%WHEN RE-TESTING THE STUDENT CANNOT RECEIVE MORE THAN A 75%SEMESTER EXAMS ARE WORTH 10% OF THEIR TOTAL GRADEALL GRADES ARE BASED ON A 100 POINT SCALEALL THE SOCIAL STUDIES COURSES ARE SELF PACED. U.S. HISTORY: THE U.S. HISTORY IS DIVIDED INTO TWO SEMESTERS. THE BOOK WE WILL BE USING IS “MASTERING THE TEKS: U.S. HISTORY SINCE 1877”. CHAPTERS 4- 10 ARE SEMESTER 1. CHAPTERS 11-16 ARE SEMESTER 2. FOR CLASSWORK FOR U.S. HISTORY THE STUDETNS WILL BE GIVEN WORKSHEETS WITH CORRESPONDING PAGE NUMBERS. THEY COMPLETE THE WORKSHEETS BY USING THE INFORMANTION LEADING UP TO THAT SPECIFIC WORKSHEET. THERE WILL BE A CHAPTER TEST AFTER EACH AND THE STUDENTS WILL COMPLETE A REVIEW SHEET PROR TO TAKING THE TEST TO ASSIST THEM RETAIN THE KNOWLEDGE. THERE WILL BE A MIDTERM EXAM AFER COMPELTION OF CHAPTER 10 AND A FINAL AFTER COMPLETION OF CHAPTER 16.U.S. HISTORY IS A STAAR TESTED SUBJECT. IN ORDER TO QUALIFY TO TAKE THE STAAR THE STATE MANDATES THEY MUST HAVE COMPLETED 75% OF THE COURSE. IN OTHER WORDS, THEY HAVE TO HAVE COMPLETED THRU CHAPTER 13 OF U.S. HISTORY WITHIN TWO WEEKS OF TAKING THE STAAR BECAUSE WE HAVE TO SEND A LIST OF TESTORS TO THE DISTRICT TESTING DEPARTMENT SO THAT THE TEST CAN BE LOADED FOR EACH STUDENT.MOCK STAAR FOR THE FALL IS 12-15 NOVEMBER.MOCK STAAR FOR THE SPRING IS 8 APRIL.THE MOCK STAAR IS A PRACTICE TEST SO THAT THE STUDENTS FEEL COMFORTABLE ON HOW TO TAKE THE ACTUAL ERNMENT: GOVERNMENT IS A SENIOR REQUIRED SEMESTER COURSE. WE USE MODULE WORK FOR GOVERNMENT AND THERE ARE 9 CHAPTERS AND A FINAL. THERE ARE CHAPTER TESTS FOR EACH OF THE NINE CHAPTERS. WITHIN THE MODULES THE CLASSWORK ASSIGNMENTS ARE INCLUDED AND WILL BE COMPLETED IN A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK OR IN A WORD DOCUMENT. AFTER EACH MODULE THERE IS A PRACTICE TEST AND AN ACTUAL TEST. BOTH WILL BE GRADED BUT THE PRACTICE TEST IS INCLUDED AS A DAILY GRADE. ECONOMICS: LIKE GOVERNMENT, ECONOMICS IS A SENIOR REQUIRED SEMESTER COURSE. THERE ARE SIX MODULES AND A FINAL. AFTER EACH MODULE THERE IS A PRACTICE TEST AND AN ACTUAL TEST. BOTH WILL BE GRADED BUT THE PRACTICE TEST IS INCLUDED AS A DAILY GRADE. LIKE GOVERNMENT THE CLASSWORK IS INCLUDED WITHIN THE MODULES AND WILL BE DONE IN A SPIRAL NOTEBOOK OR A WORD DOCUMENT.WORLD GEOGRAPHY/WORLD HISTORY: LIKE THE GOVERNMENT AND ECONOMICS THESE ARE MODULAR COURSES WITH THE WORK DONE WITHIN A SPIRAL OR SEPEARATED BY CHAPTER ON A WORD DOCUMENT. AFTER EACH MODULE THERE IS A PRACTICE TEST AND AN ACTUAL TEST. BOTH WILL BE GRADED BUT THE PRACTICE TEST IS INCLUDED AS A DAILY GRADE. SUPPLY LISTBRING:A FOCUSED AND OPEN MINDA WRITING UTENSIL (WE WILL SUPPLY THE SPIRALS)A GOOD ATTITUDE. YOU THE STUDENT ARE HERE FOR A SECOND CHANCE. MAKE THE MOST OF YOUR TIME.RULES AND POLICIESNO CELL PHONES PLEASE. IF FOR SOME REASON YOU NEED TO GET AHOLD OF OUR STUDENT PLEASE CONTACT THE FRONT DESK. YOUR STUDENT WILL HAVE ACCESS TO COMPUTER AND CHROME BOOKS TO COMPLETE THOSE PORTIONS OF THEIR ASSIGNMENTS WHEN THEY MAY NEED THE INTERNET.HONESTY IS AT THE FOREFRONT. I DETEST CHEATING ON TEST AND IF OUR STUDENT IS CAUGHT YOU WILL BE NOTIFIED. THE RESULT WILL BE A ZERO FOR THAT TEST AND IT WILL BE UP TO MS. GUERERRO IF AND WHEN THEY GET A CHANCE TO RE-TAKE THE TEST.KEEP YOUR LANGUAGE CIVILIF YOU DISAGREE, RESPECTFULLY DISAGREE AND COME WITH A SOLUTION TO THE PROBLEM WHEN YOU ADRESS IT.? I SAY “SHOULD” BECAUSE IT IS TECHNOLOGY AND IT’S ALWAYS ERNMENT/ECONOMICS/WORLD GEOGRAPHY/WORLD HISTORY/SOCIOLOGY/PSYCHOLOGY:THE RESOURCES FOR THESE ARE THRU THE MODULES THE STUDENTS WILL BE USING. THERE ARE WEBSITES FOR EACH COURSE LOCATED IN THE MODULES. HOWEVER, SOME OF THE WEBSITES ARE OLD AND THE SITE MAY NO LONGER BE UP. I AM WORKING FININDG NEW LINKS. SHOULD THEY GET A LINK THAT IS DOWN GOOGLE FOR THE INFORMATION AND PLEASE USE THE HISTORY CHANNEL LINK OR A GOV LINK. ................
