WHEREAS: On Friday, March 2, 2001 at 8:00 PM the Board of Directors of The Guidance Center, Inc. will hold the 19th Annual Cambridge Pops, featuring The Winiker Orchestra and Guest of Honor Dr. Charlotte Temin; and

WHEREAS: This event will be held at the Sala de Puerto Rico, Stratton Student Center located at Massachusetts Institute of Technology at 77 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge; and

WHEREAS: Since 1954, The Guidance Center, Inc. has been meeting the needs of children and families in Cambridge and Somerville by providing innovative prevention, early intervention, mental health and family support programs; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Charlotte Temin will be honored for her contributions and commitment to The Guidance Center, Inc. as a staff and board member; and

WHEREAS: As a psychologist with The Guidance Center, Dr. Temin developed the Companion Tutor Program, matching therapeutic mentors with children who are seen at the Guidance Center, Inc. for emotional/behavioral issues. This program is now in its twenty-ninth year; and

WHEREAS: Dr. Temin served as President of the Cambridge Mental Health Association from 1995-1997 and led the agency into its affiliation with Center, Inc. and created Guidance Center Inc., now the largest child/family agency serving Cambridge and Somerville; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council congratulate The Guidance Center, Inc. on the great work they do for the Cambridge and Somerville Community and also applaud the achievements of Dr. Charlotte Temin and send best wishes for a successful event; and be it further

WHEREAS: Each year some of the best of these programs are selected from nearly one hundred applications to receive funding through the Cambridge Arts Council’s Local Cultural Council Grant Awards Program; and

WHEREAS: This year thirty-six percent of the seventy-eight applications received were funded through the Grant Awards Program. Funding for all grant recipients in 2001 illustrates a significant endorsement of each project by fellow artists and arts professionals in the City of Cambridge; now therefore be it

WHEREAS: Congressman Joseph Moakley has provided outstanding representation to the residents of his District, the Ninth Congressional District, and the citizens of the entire Commonwealth of Massachusetts for the past thirty years; and

WHEREAS: Among the many successes of his fifty-year political career, he can number the cleanup of Boston Harbor, the new Federal courthouse in Boston, the funding of the Big Dig, his work in implicating the Salvadorian military in the murders of priests and nuns in El Salvador, which led to cutting off United States military aid and brought a quicker end to the country's civil war, and his leadership in the ongoing fight for affordable prescription drugs, especially for the elderly; and

WHEREAS: Congressman Moakley is now confronting a serious and perhaps irreversible illness; and

WHEREAS: In such times in our lives, we all need prayers and peaceful tranquility to sustain us; and

WHEREAS: Even political leaders of our community need peace and prayers; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That this City Council go on record wishing Congressman Joseph Moakley the peace of the Lord that surpasses all knowledge and understanding; and be it further

WHEREAS: Anita's first position was Legal and Accounting Secretary for the Model Cities Program, which merged with the City's Planning Department and subsequently became the Community Development Department; and

WHEREAS: Before becoming Chief Fiscal Officer, Anita held the positions of Senior Accountant and Fiscal Officer for the Community Development Department; and

WHEREAS: In 2000, Anita was named "Employee of the Year" by City Manager Robert W. Healy; and

WHEREAS: Anita will have a busy retirement; in addition to continuing the travel that she has always enjoyed, and the piano lessons which she recently began, Anita plans to join a community theater group and act in local productions. She does not rule out a Broadway Opening!; and

WHEREAS: On March 30, 2001, Anita will celebrate her retirement with her many friends and colleagues at a retirement party in her honor; now therefore be it

RESOLVED: That the City Council go on record expressing its appreciation to Anita M. Beckett for her many years of outstanding service to the citizens of Cambridge; and be it further
