Eleven Plus Tuition Sessions: Parent information and guidance for home study (year 5 children).

Areas to be covered in sessions:

• English (reading comprehension, spelling, punctuation and grammar).

• Maths (including some year 6 material).

• Verbal reasoning (vocabulary and question techniques).

• Non Verbal reasoning including Spatial reasoning.

We will aim to work on each area during each session (giving more time to areas of difficulty as we move through the year).

EXPECTATIONS: After each session your child will bring home the following:

• Word cards. Word on one side, meaning on the other. Students need to learn the meaning and word class. This aids both verbal reasoning and comprehension. A few minutes a day is the best way to learn these.

• Homework. Students will be given one homework activity per area to be completed by the next session. We will discuss any gaps and misconceptions in the next session. This homework should not take more than 10-15 minutes per subject. If your child is really struggling, leave the question or section and we will discuss it together at the next session. Also, please do let me know if your child was given a lot of help.

• Independent reading. Students who read widely and regularly stand a much better chance of developing their vocabulary and being ready for the Kent Test. There is a suggested reading list on my website with ideas of texts with the challenging vocabulary required.

Throughout the year your child will also be given some longer style ‘mock’ assessments – to be discussed as appropriate.

Students are most successful in passing the Kent Test if they have weekly support at home in addition to tuition. Ideally, they will need to spend minimum 1 hour a week on homework tasks given by me. Students attending fortnightly are advised to complete at least 1 hour of self/parent guided study (in addition to homework set by me) in the weeks they don’t attend tuition.

Suggested materials for home study (all available from Amazon)

• Bond online – an online tuition programme which self-marks and gives useful feedback (available on subscription for around £6 a month).

• Bond assessment papers and ten-minute tests for English, Maths, Verbal and Non-Verbal reasoning. I suggest materials written for the GL Exam board and that the age 9-10 books would be a good starting point in September, moving to age 10-11 by around February of the exam year.

• GL and CGP practice test paper packs.

• CGP English: Spelling, Punctuation and Grammar ten-minute tests.

• CGP Maths: Word problems ten-minute tests.

Other useful resources

• 11+ Vocabulary cartoons by A. Mason

• Eleven Plus Vocabulary by Rose McGowan – a book full of vocabulary quizzes to build range of vocabulary and word meaning.
