FASHION HISTORY TIMELINE
Purpose: Students will learn about the various eras of fashion.
Students will create renderings using a croquis.
Students will realize the importance of fashion history in the creation of current trends.
Procedure:
1. This project works well the first month of school. In an hour class this activity should just take about a half hour.
Begin by presenting a Power Point about the 1900’s as the students take Cornell Notes. If you do not have a Power Point on each era I would recommend showing a film on fashion history. The teacher will show some actual garments from this period and have a couple students model.
2. As the students enter class the next day, they are given an inspirational croquis of an outfit from the 1900’s. They will then create their own idea using the trends from that era.
They will render these and collect the notes and finished drawings for a timeline they will assemble.
3. Repeat this two-day activity for each era. 1900, (I leave out 1910) 1920, 1930, 1940, 1950, 1960, 1970, 1980.
The Timeline:
1. There will be one finished illustration for each era studied.
2. It should be rendered on plain white paper (8 ½ x11) provided by the teacher, and cut and glued to the board provided. Prismacolor markers, colored pencil and sharpie will be used. Cut out the croquis leaving an 1/8th of an inch white border.
3. Fold the 22x14 Railroad Board into 5 ½ x 14 sections (4 sections). Four eras will be placed on one side and four on the other side.
3. All eras should be labeled. Three trends from each era, presented in three complete sentences should be included at the bottom of the timeline. (Era at the top of the page)
