SeasonsJessica KlcoEDU 230 1 May 2012SeasonsGrade Level: KindergartenSubject: Science, handwriting, artTopic: SeasonsLesson Length: 3 day long lesson, today is day two, 45 minuets Purpose: To learn the four seasons and the proper attire and activities that is demonstrated during the seasons. Objective: The students will know how to distinguish the difference between the different seasons (learned and taught the previous day)The students will identify the proper clothing that they need to wear for the proper season (today, day 2)The students will be able to determine what kinds of activities are done during certain seasons (day 3)Review: Yesterday we learned the four different seasons. We learned what order they come in during the months and the affects that the seasons have on the earth: winter freezes the ground, spring brings the flowers but can still be a little chilly, summer is hot and also brings flowers, and fall is when the plants start to die and the leaves on the trees start to change color and fall. Yesterday we also started our seasons of the earth packet (there is one attached to the back of this lesson plan for you). The class has finished the first work sheet in the packet which was drawing a picture of what it would look like outside during each season. Anticipatory Set:Start off with a picture of a cold snowy winter day on the projector (the pictures are saved in the pictures and the folder is titled seasons). Then ask the kids what the temperature would be like in that picture. Then proceed to talk about how you think that it is great weather to go swimming and running around in sandals (while the picture is still of winter). The children should proceed by giggling knowing that what you are saying is wrong because they know that it is cold. So start out being funny by saying you are going to dress the opposite of how one should really dress in certain circumstances of weather. Then correct yourself after a minute or two of playing around and tell them how important it is for us to dress appropriately for the weather. Input: Today we will be learning about the proper clothing that one would wear during each season. The spring is right after winter, so it is still a little cold outside. The proper clothing would be a light jacket and some jeans and maybe a tee-shirt. The summer comes after spring and in the summer we wear shorts, dresses, tee-shirts, flip-flops/ sandals, and bathing suits for swimming. Then fall comes next and it starts to get a little cold again, so we start wearing pants and a coat again. The winter is very cold, so in the winter we wear lots of layers of clothes to stay warm. In the winter we would wear pants, a long sleeves shirt, and a coat gloves and snow pants for when we go outside.show this picture as an example when giving the input. (If you desire to give more examples of proper clothing here are more examples)SpringRain bootsRain coatsLong sleevesSummerTank topsSkirts FallSweatersBootsHat WinterSweaters BootsHat Under armor/ leggings/ long underwearModeling: “Oh My Mr. Bear What Are You Going To Wear” is a 2 ? minute video that gives a season and a particular weather forecast. When the video says what the forecast is and then says “oh my Mr. Bear what are you going to wear?” please pause the video and have the kids raise their hands to say what the bear should wear and put up all of the answers that they give you on the board and when all of the kids are out of ideas please continue the video to see what the video had him wear. Checking for Understanding: Ask the students this list of questions, and have them raise their hand to answer the questions. What kind of clothes would you wear in the winter? (sweatshirt, pants, coat, etc.)What kind of shoes would one usually wear in the summer? (sandals/flip-flops)When do you usually wear rain boots? (spring)When would you wear a fall jacket? (fall) Guided Practice: In the dress up bin pull out all of the clothes then have the kids dress up in an outfit. Then have them all stand in different parts in the room separated in the four different seasons. Have the spring kids stand under the door, the summer under the clock, the fall kids by the window, and the winter kids standing next to the white board. Do not help the kids after they get all dressed up; please tell them to dress up and then separate in the designated areas of their season. If they take longer than 5 minutes to figure out where they belong then try to help them with hints, but do not directly tell them which season they are dressed for let them figure it out for their self. Some hints that you could give them if they need it areFor SpringWhat season rains a lot so that you need rain boots and rain boots? For SummerWhat season wears sandals? When do you do to the beach? For FallWhen is a fall coat needed? For WinterWhen is it so cold we need to wear many layers/coats/snow pants/ and boots?Independent Practice: The children will independently work on their Seasons of the Earth packet and they will need crayons (those are kept in a bucket at each table). Have the children work on their page two-five of their packets. They will have to draw examples of clothes on both the boy and girl for each season. If they choose they may draw the outdoors and what it would look like during that particular season, but this is not required. Give them around ten minutes to finish this. Please walk around and make sure they are drawing the appropriate clothing for each season. Activity:Below is a picture of a stack of papers kept on top of my desk that you need to pass out to each student at this time. The activity is for them to draw their favorite outfit to wear during their favorite season and then to describe that outfit below in the space provided. Again the crayons are kept at each table. The students should get a good ten minutes to finish this activity. Then have them share their work with their table groups, and be sure to walk around engaging and helping kids with their spelling. Closure:Today we learned what kind of clothes we wear during each season. Yesterday we learned the seasons and what the weather is like for each one. Assessment:By looking at how today went, the children should have learned what to wear by how they did during the guided practice. They should have shown that they are capable of distinguishing what outfit is appropriate for which season. Also independent practice showed their knowledge with them working on their packets with their drawings of outfits for each season. Additionally the final activity with their favorite season and outfit for that particular season would show their knowledge of what to wear for the seasons. There is a quiz for you to hand out after the lesson. It is only six questions long; there are four multiple choice questions and two true or false questions. For the multiple choice questions have the students circle the correct answer, and then with the two lines given at the bottom of each question have them write the letter of the incorrect answer and next to that the correct season that it matches. For the true or false question have the student circle if the statement is true or false, and if it is false on the line below the question have them write in the correct underlined word.
