Read Aloud

Parent Night Event OverviewThe Read Aloud 21-Day Challenge Parent Night is a great opportunity to get parents excited about reading books with their children; give families tools to enhance their reading experience; demonstrate how to make reading aloud fun and engaging; and to praise them for their commitment to building a daily read aloud habit by accepting the 21-Day Challenge. Flow of the EventFamilies welcomed and greeted by familiar faces.Parents/caregivers receive the 21-Day Challenge handout and supporting materials.Families gather in the space where the opening and close will take place. Ensure childcare and book reading is provided while the parents/caregivers are attending the presentation. Opening Presenter's remarks using the Read Aloud PowerPoint presentation. Why is reading aloud important?By the end of the first grade if a child is not reading at grade level there is an 88% probability the child will not be reading at grade level by the end of the fourth grade.By kindergarten, some children have been read aloud to as few as 25 hours while others have been read aloud to as many as 1,000 hours.Ages 0-3 are crucial years in early brain development: As a parent, you are your child’s first teacher. Wrap-up by Presenter – thank the families for coming and encourage them to participate in the 21-Day Challenge (sign-up at ). Announcement of refreshments.Photographs Read Aloud would like photographs to document the event to help others see how the event looks and feels. Photographs are great to thank all the event leaders and volunteers for their efforts. Photographs may also be used on our social media pages, so we recommend waivers. The volunteer photographer's job is to circulate freely to get both candid shots and ones posed with attendees. Food and RefreshmentsEach event will decide how to handle food and refreshments. Food trucks prove to be very popular, and pizza always works well! The most important thing is to recognize the time families are giving up to be there. Be respectful how hard it is to do something so simple as to get a child dressed and then in a car seat just to be there. Parents are the first teachers and they are there to learn. Presentation Staging Participants should gather as a group for the introduction in a space large enough to accommodate everyone comfortably. A projector, screen, and laptop will be required, and a microphone and speakers enhance the experience for the families and improves the effectiveness of the presenter doing the introduction and close. But know your audience, if it is a small class or a large school, the needs will be different. What is the Opening Presenter's Role? The Opening Presenter's role is to communicate to the parents why reading aloud for 15 minutes every day is so important for their child's future learning success and how the 21-Day Challenge will work. Thank the families for participating in this important event for their children; thank the volunteers; explain why reading aloud at home is important and how to make it part of a daily routine. The presentation will be approximately 30 minutes, with 15 minutes for questions and answers. Be respectful of time – families are so busy. There is soccer practice, going to work, or a million other factors pulling parents/caregivers. We want them to get this information, but also limit the additional stress in their life. 21-Day Challenge Tracker and Celebrating SuccessDecide how to track the progress of the families in reading aloud together for at least 15 minutes for 21 days in a row. We provide tracking sheets and various pieces as part of the 21-Day Challenge materials (HYPERLINK ""). Please engage the event organizers and presenter(s) in discussing how and when the families report their progress on the Read Aloud 21-Day Challenge Tracker, and how they will be recognized and celebrated for their efforts. Letting the families know there will be a follow-up to recognize their efforts makes the Read Aloud 21-Day Challenge more meaningful. At the end, there should be two goals accomplished:Parents should know how important reading aloud starting from birth is. The community should engage together in the 21-Day Challenge. Good luck! Have fun! Send pictures! ................
