The Deacon's Corner

Deacon Timothy Murphy | DeaconTMurphy@ Refuting the world view ? of sickness and disease

In the world view, if disease makes people sick, then disease must be eradicated or at best controlled. We have been inundated by the idea we can understand the physical cause of illness and manipulate the physical body to a person's advantage. We often read about how disease is preventable and treatable; illness and death from disease is a risk not properly mitigated in society. The world view of a perfect society without disease conveys vast social and economic benefits to society at large. As a recent example, the progression of regarding the COVID-19 vaccines: The

focus progressed from a sincere good of trying to stop the spread of disease, to impudently controlling most of society for the seemingly greater good. Pride and greed for both money and power, rather than love, has become the motivator for understanding disease and has turned love of

caring for people in need to an insatiable hatred for disease.

The Catholic Church recognizes the full picture of disease and its origin. There is no sure way to avoid illness, no magic bullet. While the Church supports medical research for the good of the people, it does not condone the unrestrained manipulation of God's creation to the will of man and certainly not forced widespread experimentation on humans (a violation of the exercise of free will and following one's conscience). The Church recognizes sin, in general, as the source of disease and corruption in the world and Christ as divine physician. The Church teaches us the complex value of disease. Illness becomes a way to conversion of heart; Christ came to heal completely body and soul! We even see this in the story of Moses and the Israelites in the desert, when the people were bitten by the snake (symbolizing sin), all they had to do was look upon the seraph to be healed (future symbolism of Christ on the cross) (Num 21:8). In fact, the seraph on the staff is the symbol of the medical profession: . The Church recognizes the special grace of illness through the Sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick, in which we can unite our suffering to that of Christ, forgiveness of sins in extreme circumstances, restoration of health if it is beneficial to the salvation of the soul and a possible preparation for passing to eternal life. The real healing is in the spiritual realm, otherwise Christ would remove all disease for all time. If we can find the courage to not be afraid of disease

and look for goodness even in sickness, the goodness of God can be found.

Jesus went through all the towns and villages, teaching in their synagogues, proclaiming the good news of the kingdom and healing every disease and sickness. (Matt. 9:35)

Thank you for your stewardship!
