QUARTERLY BACKGROUND

We embark upon a quarter of lessons that will focus on the need for encouragement among Israel God’s people, and Job as a person who had been seriously tested. In each case there appeared to be a sense of hopelessness, but for God! In the case of Israel, sin was the cause. But in the case of Job, there was no sin that caused his suffering, but God saw his faithfulness and used it to defeat the lies of the Adversary. Job was God’s Trophy of Faithfulness! You might say that in this series of lessons, someone is displaced but not misplaced! Trusting in the Immutable God is the believer’s only faithful outlet to victory.

LESSON INTRODUCTION

Background: Our lesson introduces God’s prophetic voice of hope, Jeremiah. His uncompromising prophetic preaching had been heard but ignored for about 23 years. Earlier, the last of Judah’s good kings, Josiah had heeded the Word of God, after it was discovered missing in the House of God. He began to bring many reforms that were life-changing. He destroyed the worship of Baal and Asherah and eliminated the male prostitutes and their places of practice. Josiah wiped out mediums, wizards, and soothsayers. And now Jeremiah is used of God with great personal challenges on his life (he was forbidden to marry, mistreated by his family, hated by the religious leaders and persecuted by the kings, but he remained faithful to Jehovah, even though he was now in jail).

Our lesson focuses on Jeremiah’s preaching that encouraged the Jews to trust in the Lord in spite of their circumstances. God had surely brought them chastisement for sinful living, but the Prophet encourages them with a hopeful future. Our Anticipated Power Points are:

• A Promise of Reinstatement. Jeremiah 30:1-3

• A Promise of Renewal. Jeremiah 30:18-22

“STANDING ON THE PROMISES OF HOPE”

LESSON OUTLINE

I. A Promise of Reinstatement in the Future. Jeremiah 30:1-3

In chapter 27:2, Jehovah told Jeremiah to make bonds and yokes and place them upon his neck to illustrate the captivity of Judah and the surrounding countries by the Babylonians. God said that Judah and the nations should yield to this captivity and they would not suffer extreme hardship (27:6-8). In chapter 28, the voices of the false prophets, especially Hananiah, rebuked Jeremiah, gave false prophecy and led the people to more rebellion against God and a more difficult captivity. But God’s promises spoke of future hope.

Peace and preservation is promised in Jeremiah 30:1-3. God would return and preserve the nation in spite of the flaws in their thinking. Back in chapter 29, Jeremiah wrote a letter to those who were already in captivity and also to those who were yet to go (vs. 10). 70 years of their captivity must pass, (not 2 or a few), but God commanded them to build houses and families and to labor. Also have children, seek the peace of the city and pray (Jer. 29:4-10). In God’s prophetic time He would reinstate the nation back to gracious status. Not just Judah but also Israel. Just stand on the promises of His hope! This will be fulfilled during the Messiah’s rule.

II. A Promise of Renewal in the Future. Jeremiah 30:18-22

As many of the words of the prophets sometimes have dual meanings, so I see here. Upon reading verses 18-22, it is evident that God will restore or bring about renewal to the nation of Israel as a whole, the Northern tribes of Israel, and the Southern tribe of Judah.

In the writings of Ezra and Nehemiah, we see a remnant returning to rebuild the second Temple. But there is a Greater One who will come, and He is David’s Seed, Jesus Christ who is the Messiah. After the time of Tribulation, He will set up the throne of David in a totally renewed Jerusalem, and there shall He give leadership over Israel’s greatest Temple in the days of God’s greatest Temple.

According to the Expositor and Illuminator, “The God of Israel revealed to Jeremiah that Israel, as an entire nation, would experience a future restoration that would be magnificent in its completeness. Israel’s present nomadic and unsettled living conditions would be replaced by a culture of permanence. The destroyed dwelling places would be completely restored…Israel would be a sovereign nation, no longer ruled by foreign powers. Her leaders would be Jewish, and they would be brilliant, gifted, and capable.” With such a description, I can only see the Son of David Jesus Christ ruling from the top and all the people glorifying and honoring Him.

What a blessing as the Kingdom truly arrives with the King! One need only Stand on the Promises of Hope!
