INTRODUCTION

Well beloved, we have come to the final lesson in the first phase of the Fall Quarter – A Living Faith. Our focus has been on “The Facts of Faith.” Let us prepare to demonstrate our faith through our love. Reading from the Union Gospel Press Expositor and Illuminator: “To which would an unbeliever be more attracted – a friendly atheist or a cranky church member? Would there be anything in the church member’s religion to attract an unbeliever?

We know that it is essential to God that we believe the right things – the Trinity, the deity of Christ, His death for our sins, His resurrection. But those around us will not judge us by our theology; they will observe whether or not our faith has changed our lives. Jesus stated this clearly: ‘By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one for another.’ John 13:35.

True faith shows itself through steadfast love. Both James and John questioned the genuineness of a profession of faith without love (James 2:14-20; I John 3:16-18).” Beloved, let us examine the teaching of Hebrews and I Corinthians 13 to see how we may demonstrate our faith through Unconditional Love.

Anticipated Power Points: “The Practice of Faith must be Continued Through Unconditional Love.”

• The Expression of Love. Hebrews 13:1-3

• The Essential Need of Love. I Corinthians 13:1-3

• The Essence of Love. I Corinthians 13:4-7

• The Eternality of Love. I Corinthians 13:8-13

LESSON OUTLINE

I. The Expression of Love. Hebrews 13:1-3

The writer expresses who we should love with a few examples and an overwhelming command to do it! Don’t let this love end, and keep showing it! “A word about love (13:1-3)

A. Each other. (13:1)

B. Strangers. (13:2)

C. Prisoners. (13:3)” Wilmington

II. The Essential Need of Love. I Corinthians 13:1-3

Paul reinforces the Hebrews command with simple practicality over supernatural acts and privileges!

“The importance of love (13:1-3).

A. The gift of tongues is useless without it (13:1).

B. The gift of prophecy is useless without it (13:2a).

C. The gift of knowledge is useless without it (13:2b).

D. The gift of faith is useless without it (13:2c).

E. The gift of giving is useless without it (13:3).” Wilmington

III. The Essence of Love. I Corinthians 13:4-7

Love is flawless in its essence. I John 4:8 tells us, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”

“The impeccability of love (13:4-7)

A. In relation to saints (13:4a): It is patient and kind, not jealous.

B. In relation to self (13:4b-5a): It is not boastful, proud, or rude, and it never seeks its own way.

C. In relation to sin (13:5b-6): It is not irritable, nor does it keep a record of wrongs; it is never glad about injustice or unrighteousness but rejoices with the truth.

D. In relation to situations (13:7): It never gives up, never loses faith, is always hopeful, and endures through every circumstance.” Wilmington

IV. The Eternality of Love. I Corinthians 13:8-13

God’s practice of love is eternal towards us and we shall practice it above all for eternity.

“The indestructibility of love.(13:8-13)

A. Unlike the other gifts, love is permanent (13:8).

1. Prophecy will cease (13:8a).

2. Tongues will cease (13:8b).

3. Knowledge will cease (13:8c).

B. Unlike other gifts, love is complete (13:9-12) Paul offers two illustrations.

1. The child/adult illustration (13:9-11)

a. The gifts, if used without love, may be likened to the attitudes and actions of an immature child (13:9-11a).

b. Love may be likened to the attitudes and actions of a mature adult (13:11b).

2. The mirror/face-to-face illustration (13:12)

a. In the present, through the gifts, we see but a mirrorlike reflection of God (13:12a).

b. In the future, through love, we will see God face-to-face (13:12b)” Wilmington

C. Unlike the other gifts, love is invincible (13:13)

“1. Faith and hope are among God’s greatest gifts (13:13a).

2. Love is God’s greatest gift (13:13b).” Wilmington

CLOSING

The Exemplification of Love is fully seen at Calvary! John 3:16-17, “He that loveth not knoweth not God; for God is love.”
