Volunteerism:

Church: A primary focus for more than half a century, I have served in almost every facet of the Southern Baptist work since still in high school in the early 1950's. These responsibilities have included Bible teaching from preschool students through senior adults, from large congregations of more than 2000 to mission churches with less than 50 members. I have conducted leadership training from the local level to state and national training seminars and including three years as a full time minister of education. I currently serve on one of the post-Katrina restoration committees of First Baptist Church of Hammond and am a trustee of that church.

Service Clubs:

The first female President of Hammond Kiwanis Club, 1993, I was honored by the Louisiana, Mississippi, West Tennessee District through the Distinguished Service Award, Louisiana Mississippi, West Tennessee, 1994

and the Distinguished Club President Award, 1994

Elected Lt Governor for the Tangipahoa, St Tammany Division in 1995, I was again honored through the designation of Distinguished Lt. Governor of Kiwanis International for Louisiana, Mississippi, and West Tennessee, 1995-1996

Honored as Kiwanian of the Year, 1990, 1991, 1992, and 1997 by the Hammond Club, I was also presented the Distinguished Service Award in 1993, and 1996. In 2001, Kiwanis International, Indianapolis, posted my name on our International Tablet of Honor for service to the children of the world.

Schools:

The Good Behavior Program , Terrific Kids, and BUG (Bringing Up Grades) were part of initiatives during my tenure as chair of Youth Services committees in 1990 through 1993 and continue to the current time.

Presented the highly coveted and exclusive International Service Award in July 1997, at the Kiwanis International Convention, Nashville, Tennessee for the work done in Hammond at the East Side Primary School, this ongoing program to reward good behavior and develop positive citizenship among at risk children in our community is in its fourteenth year. Conceived and Pioneered by John Zewe and myself in 1993, we designed and implemented the program and developed an instrument to measure its effectiveness. The impact of the program astounded all of us involved and international recognition led to our development of a packet which was sent to communities around the United States upon request so that other communities might develop similar programs in their schools.

Church and Community:

In addition to my own service club and church responsibilities, I have worked with churches and community leaders in the capacity of Literacy teacher, food bank supporter, clothing needs provider, as a member of the original organizational group for Tangi Cares. In the capacity of Tangi Cares action, I teamed with Alan Feemster and others to do major repairs to the homes of elderly residents of Tangipahoa Parish. The Tangi Cares teams worked on Saturdays for the first year of that organization's existence. Often Alan and I would work together for up to 12 hours in a single day, furnishing materials and using our own tools to do the home repairs needed to make the badly deteriorating homes safe for elderly residents.

After Katrina, the mayor of Hammond asked me to serve on the critical Planning and Zoning Board. In this capacity I have been privileged to work with the other four members of the board to help develop much needed changes in our city zoning ordinances. Crisis development was somewhat controlled while meeting temporary needs.
