Richard Taylor and the Red River Campaign of 1864

Samuel W. Mitcham, Jr.

Pelican Books-Gretna, Louisiana

An outstanding Epic! This book is one of more than forty books authored by Samuel Mitcham, Jr. It has received much praise, as well it should. It is an exciting ride through, as described by the New England Militias, “Some of the most beautiful country in the world!” Even Yankee General Banks thought that it would be a most grand place to “settle down” after the war and after his “presidency” was over. Here you will meet such confederate greats as Texas General Tom Green, General E. Kirby Smith, Shreveport’s Henry Watkins Allen, Prince de Polignac (Carmile Armand Julie Marie) or affectionately called, “General Polecat.” And of course Gen. Richard Taylor, ex-president’s son, gritty, opinionated, stern and known for his descriptive vocabulary! On the northern side, there is “Bobbin Boy” Banks, 24th Governor of Massachusetts, mediocre strategist-promoted by Lincoln (because of his political help) Henry W. Halleck and Maj. Gen. Andrew Jackson Smith, affectionately referred to, by his men, as “Whiskey Smith.” The same “General Smith” who shouted, as his men set fire to all the private homes and business in Alexandria, “Now this is real war!” His troops had painted the names of Texas cities on the sides of their supply wagons…Ft. Worth, San Antonio, Galveston…..indicating the town they would burn and loot! Come ride with me then, it’s worth the money….and then some!
