Internet Scavenger Hunt 2: Origin of Holidays

Rules

• Click on the Microsoft Office icon, choose Microsoft Office PowerPoint 2007.

• Type the question in PowerPoint

• Look up the topic on the Internet using Google and find the answer to each question. Hint: use lots of keywords, or even the whole question, in your search.

• When you find the answer, highlight it, copy and paste it in PowerPoint after the question. Copy and paste the URL also. If you already know the answer, you still need to find the info on a Web page and list the URL.

• Next, if possible, find a clipart of a picture on the Internet to represent the subject of the question. If you find a picture on the Internet, right-click on it, choose “save the picture as”, and save the picture to the documents directory.

• Go back to PowerPoint and choose “insert” then “picture”, then find the picture in the picture directory. Click on it to insert it. Save the PowerPoint presentation as Internet Scavenger Hunt 2: Origin of Holiday.

• The PowerPoint presentation should have at least 23 slides including a title slide, table of contents with hyperlinks, and a conclusion slide. Each of your slides will also need to have a hyperlink to get back to the table of contents. Here is the list of questions:

5. Black History Month – when did it originate and why?

6. St. Patrick’s Day – Where did it originate and what is the significance of it?

7. Easter – Where did it come from and what’s the significance of the eggs and bunnies?

8. Passover – Where did it originate and what does it mean?

9. Earth Day – What is the meaning of it?

10. Mother’s Day – When was the first Mother’s Day and who started it?

11. Memorial Day – Why do we celebrate it and why in May?

12. Father’s Day – When was the first Father’s Day and who started it?

13. Independence Day – Who declared it and why?

14. Labor Day – Who started it and why?

15. National Hispanic Month – When did it originate, who originated it and why?

16. Halloween – What does it really stand for and who was the first to celebrate it?

17. Thanksgiving – When and where did this tradition originate and by whom?

18. Veteran’s Day – What is the meaning of it, who started it, and why November?

19. Christmas – Where did this holiday originate, what is the significance of Santa Claus and why do we exchange presents?

20. The seasons – According to Greek Mythology, who was abducted to account for the season changes and where was she taken?
