(Samaritans were inhabitants of Israel, the Northern Kingdom. They received their name from the capital of Israel, Samaria. In 722/21 BC Assyria defeated the Northern Kingdom. Many Israelites were deported out of their land and replaced by other conquered people, non-Jews. The racial mixture of the remaining Jews with non-Jews became known as Samaritans. They had much in common with the Jews religiously. They used the Pentateuch the first five books in the Old Testament, but rejected the rest of the Old Testament. They worshipped the Lord, observed the Sabbath, Sacred Feasts, circumcision, and looked for the Messiah. There existed extreme hostility between the Jews and the Samaritans from Old Testament times. The Jews looked down on Samaritans as racial and religious half-breeds. Normally, Jews did not go through their land. Contacts between Jews and Samaritans were limited to only business matters.
