My Family: Mary Christmas

Sunday, 25 December 2011

King of the festive fun-spoilers Ben Harper (Robert Lindsay) and the rest of his bonkers brood - are back in this My Family Christmas Special

from 2010 - and he's no keener to get into the holiday spirit than in any other year.

Whilst playing Santa at Susan's (Zoe Wanamaker) work’s Christmas party Ben becomes emotionally involved when a little girl asks him to

reconcile her mother and grandfather, who have fallen out. He actually succeeds, winning rare praise from Susan for his efforts.

The Harpers are less successful, though, when their lavish New Year party, with fireworks, a band and food from TV chef Ainsley Harriott,

initially fails to poach guests from nasty neighbour Casey's glitzy annual event. Can recent dental patient Rolf Harris save the night with his

presence or will the rocket literally go up? At least Susan and Ben see in the New Year presenting a united front.

Easy Virtue

Sunday, 25 December 2011

The twenties have roared... the thirties have yet to swing. John Whittaker (Ben Barnes), a young Englishman, falls madly in love with sexy and

glamorous American Larita (Jessica Biel), and they marry impetuously.

However when the couple returns to the family home, John's mother Mrs. Whittaker (Kristin Scott Thomas) has an instant allergic reaction to her

new daughter-in-law, and although Larita tries her best to fit in, she fails to tiptoe through the minefield laid by her mother-in-law. She

soon realises she has to play Mrs. Whittaker's game and fight back if she's going to save her marriage. A battle of wits ensues and sparks fly.

Although Mrs. Whittaker manipulates every situation to undermine her, Larita remains frustratingly calm and engineers sassy counter attacks.

However, before long, her mother-in-law's manipulation starts to work on John, and Larita fears their relationship is in danger.

In a grand finale, where the secrets from Larita's past are revealed, she finally makes a break for freedom from the suffocating house...

Outnumbered: Christmas Special

Monday, 26 December 2011 ABC1 Premiere

Outnumbered follows the daily chaos of family life with two parents and three young children locked in an unequal contest (hence the title).

Containing elements of improvisation, this comedy is an honest portrayal of the well meaning parental incompetence that happens in most homes,

as Mum (Claire Skinner) and Dad (Hugh Dennis) attempt to raise their kids with the minimum of emotional damage for all concerned.

Experience the daily rollercoaster of family life as Mum and Dad try to keep up with the inquisitive and imaginative minds of their three

hilarious offspring: The eldest is Jake (Tyger Drew-Honey), a thoughtful eleven year old whose parents are a perpetual embarrassment to him.

Then there's Ben (Daniel Roche), a terrifyingly exuberant eight year old and Karen (Ramona Marquez), a five-year-old girl with the looks of an

angel and the mind of a barrister.

It's Boxing Day in the Brockman household and Santa has paid a visit, along with some burglars.

While Mum and Dad try to maintain some festive spirit, Ben wreaks havoc with a mechanical hand, Jake argues the case for pirated music and

Karen is busy writing New Year's resolutions - not for herself, but for the rest of the family, and Barack Obama.

With guests arriving, some welcome, some not, the pressure is on Dad to get lunch on the table. But where's Grandad?

Nigella Kitchen: Rags To Riches

Tuesday, 27 December 2011

Truly heavenly meals don't have to start life with painfully expensive ingredients. Nigella's got a whole host of sublime recipes up her sleeve

that hail from far more modest beginnings. Like South Indian Vegetable Curry - made from the wilting contents of a Monday morning fridge raid,

decadent Chocolate Chip Bread pudding, aka: stale bread reincarnated. Beer Braised Pork Knuckles with Caraway, Garlic, Apples and Potatoes -

totally divine and cheap to boot. And who would have thought plain old eggs and bacon could be transformed into a sumptuous salad or the store

cupboard could hold the key to a crowd pleasing Pantry Paella? This is a real case of rags to riches; where divine meals don't have to break

the bank.

Co produced by Pacific Productions London and Pabulum Productions.

Nature's Miracle Babies: Back From The Brink (Panda, Tamarin, Asian Rhino)

Tuesday, 27 December 2011 New Series

An inspiring series that follows the dedicated individuals working to save some of the world's most critically vulnerable species.

These are ordinary people doing extraordinary things. Each new life they help reach adulthood is truly a bundle of hope for the future. But for

some, this is only the beginning of the journey. The ultimate challenge is to raise these animals and then successfully return them to the

wild.

Zoologist Martin Hughes-Games visits projects all over the world - from outback Australia to the savannahs of East Africa, from local zoo

breeding programs to relocation in the Amazonian region of Brazil.

In the first episode, Martin visits the Chengdu Panda Base in China, where giant panda breeding is being taken to new levels. He also follows

the hard-won battles of keepers at Jersey Zoo as they try to breed the most threatened primate in South America, the pied tamarin. In the

Brazilian rainforest, he sees first-hand the habitat destruction threatening this tiny, intelligent monkey. Back in Jersey, he helps to

hand-raise tamarin twins rejected by their mother. At Whipsnade Zoo he visits an Asian one-horned rhino that is coming to the end of an epic 16

months pregnancy. With her baby weighing as much as a man, giving birth proves to be an enormous challenge.

This Way Of Life

Tuesday, 27 December 2011

A film about a family, mum, dad, six kids and 50 wild horses, a beach, a mountain and a burnt down house.

Against the stunning beauty of New Zealand's rugged Ruahine Mountains, Peter Karena and his wife Colleen struggle to instil in their kids the

values of independence, courage and happiness.

The family has little in the way of material possession but they possess a physicality most of us can only dream of. The children ride bareback

as they hunt and play in the wild. Unafraid and untamed, they are supremely confident, as if risk is an alien concept.

Shot over four years, This Way of Life is an intimate portrait of a Maori family and their relationship with nature, adversity, their horses

and society at large. The Karenas cultivate the magic in the everyday, turning hardship into a meaningful and satisfying life.

This complete immersion in another way of life reveals that the price of freedom is something that is well worth paying.

Country House Rescue Revisits

Wednesday, 28 December 2011

This week Ruth returns to Cothay Manor, one of the country's finest medieval houses with its beautifully manicured gardens. It is a labour of

love for its eccentric owners Mary-Anne and Alastair Robb, who single-handedly run the estate. The gardens and house were always open to the

public, but the Robb needed to be making more money, and were not sure of how to make that a reality without spoiling, as they saw it, the

essence of the estate.

They also hadn't thought through the future of Cothay and who out of their four children would take on the estate.

Ruth Watson recognised the exquisite beauty of the house and gardens as well as the sorry state the business was in. She taught the Robbs how

to make the garden more commercial but without taking away from its natural charm. Food became a long debated topic with Ruth trying to impress

upon Mary-Anne how important a proper tearoom is.

Find out whether the Robbs have followed Ruth's advice, in this third catch-up episode. Have they taken her advice and sorted out their tearoom

and plant-selling area? And is the issue of inheritance now resolved?

The Trip: Holbeck Ghyll

Wednesday, 28 December 2011

Continuing their culinary journey in the north of England, Steve Coogan and Rob Brydon head for Holbeck Ghyll, a charming Victorian hunting

lodge in the lakes district.

On their scenic way in William Wordsworth country they check into digs which were once the home of poet Samuel Taylor Coleridge, and Coogan

sees many similarities between him and the poet as they speak with a tour guide in his bedroom and study.

Over a sumptuous lunch, the pair parry and thrust the pros and cons of achieving greatness or staying mediocre: whether it's better to be a

tortoise or a hare; and continue their hilarious impressions including Anthony Hopkins, Al Pacino, James Mason and Richard Burton.

River Cottage: Everyday: Meat

Thursday, 29 December 2011 New Series

Author and presenter Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, takes river cottage back to the nation, demonstrating that the RC philosophy has relevance

and a use for everyone on a daily basis. Hugh examines the British relationship with eight categories; meat, fish, veg, fruit, bread, lunch,

breakfast and finally treats, and then shows how these relationships can be significantly improved by injecting a bit of river cottage

attitude.

The series is a practical manifesto - not just a guide of how to make the most of cheap cuts of meat, or what to look for when buying fish. It

will also arm the viewer with an approach to buying and cooking.

Episode One – Meat

Hugh sets out his belief that the way to make organic free-range meat fit your budget, is to eat and enjoy cheap cuts rather than cheap meat.

He's off to a butcher to champion these passionate meat practitioners and sell the cheapest cut in the shop - ox liver. Devilled in a hot and

spicy sauce, it proves to be a real winner.

Hugh takes his passion for cheap, cheerful and hearty stews to a local five-a-side team, where he suffers footballing failure but success in

setting up a communal stew club.

Back at Park Farm, there are also stocks, dumplings and the perfect spag bol. And, because it's about meat, the episode ends with a BBQ.

Jimmy's Food Factory: Love Or Loathe

Thursday, 29 December 2011

Entrepreneurial farmer Jimmy Doherty turns his attention to foods that people either love or hate, like chewing gum. He is eager to see how the

makers of the supermarket variety get the stretchy consistency to happen.

But he finds there is an amazing amount of ingredients and procedures required to get the gum to the stage it is edible and chewable.

It really puts his barnyard and household ingenuity and implements to the test.

The People's Supermarket

Thursday, 29 December 2011 New Series

Chef and restaurateur Arthur Potts Dawson is more than familiar with waste, the resulting cost that is passed on to producers and customers

alike, and the high price that is paid by the environment.

Armed with the knowledge that British supermarkets bin over 1,000 tons of food a day, Arthur set about starting an independent no-waste

supermarket, run for the people by the people.

Filmed over two years, this four-part series follows Arthur from the inception of the idea, through to the turbulent months after the

supermarket opens in central London.

Although anyone can shop at The People's Supermarket, it is no ordinary shopping experience. In a bid to keep prices as low as possible, Arthur

arranges for the shop to be run by members who work there for four hours per month in exchange for a 10% discount on their shopping and a

chance to vote on how the supermarket is run. It is a business model that has worked for a food co-op in Brooklyn (USA). But can it work in the

UK?

In the first episode, Arthur tries to get his big idea started, but worries that a big name supermarket will grab the premises he's got his eye

on. He's identified the ideal location in central London for his supermarket. Desperate for cash to stock the shelves, he holds a fundraising

dinner with the food and wine sourced from the tons of perfectly good food the big supermarkets have thrown away.

As the supermarket opens its doors for the first time, Arthur finds out whether his dream to change the way we shop is ever going to take off.

Friday, 30 December 2011

Susan (Zoe Wanamaker) insists that she and Ben (Robert Lindsay) go away for the weekend to a couples' retreat but Ben thinks the whole thing is

a joke. Janey (Daniela Denby-Ashe) and Michael (Gabriel Thomson) are delighted to have the house to themselves.

Michael's new boyfriend, Matt, comes over to return Mikey's watch - he invites Janey out clubbing with them and much to Michael's annoyance,

she accepts.

When Janey and Matt get on like a house on fire Michael becomes more than a little annoyed, and when Matt dumps him but wants to stay in touch

with Janey it is even worse...

Meanwhile on the retreat, Ben misbehaves throughout every activity and the weekend culminates with the pair of them being thrown out after Ben

makes Susan laugh during a meditation session. They don't care, they know they don't need a couples' retreat to keep things fresh - their

marriage is as solid as the mugs they made in pottery class…
