2. Characterization: the way in which the writer portrays the characters in a book, play, or movie
3. Dynamic Characters: a character who undergoes some important change in a story
4. Trait: a special quality or something special about someone’s personality
5. Motivation: what causes someone to act a certain way
6. Conflict: struggle between two opposing forces: plot tension

7. External Conflict: when a character struggles with some outer force. Example: another person, group, or force of nature.)
8. Internal Conflict: when a character struggles with some force within himself or herself. Example: a decision, moral choice, or handicap
9. Point of View: angle of the narrator: the perspective on events of the narrator or a particular character in a story
10. Relationships: the connection of people in friendship, family, work, school, or other activities.
11. Setting: the background of time and place in which a story takes place
12. Mood: emotional response a reader has to a scene
13. Simile: a figure of speech that uses the words “like” or “as” to draw a comparison. Example: the water was as cold as ice
14. Metaphor: the application of a word or phrase to somebody or something that is not meant literally but to make a comparison, for example, saying “He ate a mountain of mashed potatoes.”
15. Allusion: a reference to a real or fictitious person, event, place, work of art, or another work of literature within writing
16. Idioms: fixed expression with non-literal meaning: a fixed, distinctive, and often colorful expression whose meaning cannot be understood from the combined meanings of its individual words, for example, “never cracked a book”
17. Suspense: enjoyable tension: a feeling of tense excitement about how something such as a mystery novel or movie will end
18. Analogy: a shorthand formula for stating relationships between words. Example: frightened : scared :: picky : choosy
19. Stereotype: is an oversimplified picture of a group or person. It emphasizes a person’s group characteristics and overlooks a person’s individual traits. Example: all greasers are hoods
20. Plot: is the sequence of events (conflicts) that happen in a story.
21. Plot Structure: a number of episodes or separate incidents
• Exposition: an introduction to the main characters, settings, and situations of the plot
• Rising Action: the events and complications that lead to an important and dramatic point in the plot
• Climax: the point of greatest interest and emotional involvement in the plot
• Falling action: the events that develop from the climax and lead to the conclusion
• Resolution or Denouement: the final outcome which ties up any loose ends left in the story.
22. Symbols: an object or action that stands for itself and yet also suggests another meaning. Example: dove = peace
23. Theme: overall message of the novel
24. Tone: the reflection of an author's attitude toward his or her subject
25. Inferences: evidence based guesses
26. Protagonist: the main character
27. Antagonist: characters who oppose the main character
