Nashville Churches of Christ – Name Authority

Name Authority for Nashville, Tennessee Stone-Campbell Congregations

This list comprises 319 names of 227 known congregations of the Stone-Campbell Movement in Nashville and Davidson County, Tennessee from 1812 to 2012.

This list cross-references each known variation of time, place and character names of every known congregation of this movement from its inception in Nashville in the 1810’s until September 2012. Older sources are not only inconsistent in spelling, but also frequently interchange congregational names with addresses. Nonetheless, in the interest of fullness I included every variation I encountered in the sources.

All entries should be assumed to refer to acapella Churches of Christ, with these two exceptions. Congregations now affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ) are indicated in their initial listing with the parenthetical designation ‘(Disciples of Christ).’ Christian Churches not affiliated with Disciples or congregations using the name “Christian Church” prior to the 1968 Restructure are not indicated as ‘Disciples’, rather as, e.g., Aspen Grove Christian Church.

In the case of Christian Churches who affiliated with the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), I have listed them twice since in every case a formal change of the congregation’s name took place so as to fully identify with the denomination: Vine Street Christian Church and Vine Street Christian Church (Disciples of Christ).
