Fear in the Greek (and English) World

Lesson Plan

1. Write the top 10 “Most Popular” and the top 10 “Best” phobias on the board.

2. Hand out list of phobias (I suggest printing 4 to a page, front-back, to get it all on one sheet).

3. Hand out bingo boards (print one sheet containing two boards to each student).

4. Give the students time to look up each phobia and place the definition of sixteen of the phobias on their

bingo boards (5-8 minutes).

5. Play bingo by calling out the phobias located on the two lists in a random order. (5-10 minutes)

6. If a student yells bingo (email Mr. Yaggy if you’re not sure how this is played), have him/her give the

name of each phobia on the winning strip on his/her bingo board. If he/she correctly names them,

the student wins (A prize? Your respect and admiration? You decide.).

7. Review the terms and the roots associated with them (5 minutes).

8. Encourage the kids to look through the list and discuss the italicized phobias, which are the ones

containing roots I suspect may show up on the NCEE. Which ones

have they heard of before? Which ones do they have? Which are the funniest? Weirdest? Et

cetera (5-10 minutes).

9. As you mention them, make a list on the board (go for about 20) and play bingo again by

repeating steps 3-7 (15-23 minutes).

Acrophobia: Really, it's the fear of heights. People who suffer from acrophobia may feel like they are being pulled toward the edge of a high place. Acrophobia comes from the Greek word "acron," meaning height.

Aerophobia: fear of flying. Aerophobia also means an irrational fear of fresh air or drafts of air, the fear of swallowing air, or airborne substances. Aerophobia comes from the Greek "aero."

Agliophobia: fear of pain.

Agoraphobia: fear of public places, open areas, or fear of crowds. Also the fear of leaving or travelling too far from a safe place, Agoraphobia comes from the Greek "agora," meaning marketplace.
