This exciting program provides a framework of academic challenge that is based on MYP’s three fundamental concepts of holistic learning, communication, and intercultural awareness. Throughout your academic career, you will develop the traits of the IB learner profile: inquirer, knowledgeable, thinker, communicator, principled, open-minded, caring, risk-taker, balanced, and reflective.***It is the expectation that any student enrolled in an AP course will register for and take the AP exam***ALL students taking AP Statistics will register for the 2016 AP Statistics Exam. It will take place on May 13th, 2016. Register now with Mrs. Rebecca Hogan rhogan@ or call the Counseling Office.**Here is a link to the Course Description found of the College Board Website: OverviewAims: The aims of any MYP subject state in a general way what the teacher may expect to teach or do, and what the student may expect to experience or learn. In addition, they suggest how the student may be changed by the learning experience. The aims of the teaching and study of AP Statistics are to encourage and enable students to:enjoy mathematics and to develop curiosity as well as an appreciation of its elegance and powerdevelop an understanding of the principles and nature of mathematicscommunicate clearly and confidently in a variety of contextsdevelop logical, critical and creative thinking, and patience and persistence in problem solvingdevelop power of generalization and abstractionapply and transfer skills to a wide range of situations including real life, other areas of knowledge and future developmentsappreciate how developments in technology and mathematics have influenced each otherappreciate the moral, social and ethical implications arising from the work of mathematicians and the applications of mathematics appreciate the international dimension in mathematics through an awareness of the universality of mathematics and its multicultural and historical perspectivesappreciate the contribution of mathematics to other areas of knowledgedevelop the knowledge, skills and attitudes necessary to pursue further studies in mathematicsdevelop the ability to reflect critically upon their own work and the work of others.AACPS Unit TitleMYP Unit TitleUnit QuestionGlobal ContextExploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patternsMore than just your average data set.How would you describe data using graphs and numbers?Identities and RelationshipsSampling and Experimentation: Planning and conducting a study.Let’s conduct a study! What must be taken into consideration when designing a study?Globalization and Sustainability; Scientific and Technical InnovationAnticipating Patterns: Exploring random phenomena using probability and simulation. I can see the future. How does probability relate to random variables?Scientific and Technical Innovation; Identities and RelationshipsStatistical Inference: Estimating population parameters and testing hypotheses.Test me, I dare you.How can we use tests to confidently accept or reject our hypotheses?Scientific and Technical InnovationScope and SequenceUnit I: Exploring Data: Describing patterns and departures from patterns. In mathematics courses, students will understand that math is a universal language. Students will explore how mathematical concepts are seen throughout the world. AP SCORE QUALIFICATION (AP Statistics Test: May 13th, 2016)The Readers’ scores on the free-response questions are combined with the results of the computer-scored multiple-choice questions; the weighted raw scores are summed to give a composite score. The composite score is then converted to a grade on AP’s 5-point scale:5 - Extremely well qualified - College Credit granted at all institutions accepting AP scores-3 college credits or more4 - Well qualified - College Credit granted at all institutions accepting AP scores-3 college credits/rarely more3 – Qualified -College Credit granted at MOST institutions accepting AP scores-up to 3 college credits2 - Possibly qualified -College Credit rarely granted at institutions accepting AP scores-up to 3 college credits1 - No recommendation -College Credit not grantedAP Exam grades of 5 are equivalent to A grades in the corresponding college course. AP Exam grades of 4 are equivalent to grades of A–, B+, and B in college. AP Exam grades of 3 are equivalent to grades of B–, C+, and C in college.975360195580Students are expected to bring the following materials to every class every day:3” Binder (with dividers)Lined PaperPencil and/or Pen Agenda (given out on Day 1, kept in binder)Graphing Calculator00Students are expected to bring the following materials to every class every day:3” Binder (with dividers)Lined PaperPencil and/or Pen Agenda (given out on Day 1, kept in binder)Graphing CalculatorRequired materialsTextbooks and Resources: The Practice of Statistics, 5th edition, by Daren StarnesAssessments (address formative & summative)Students will be informally assessed throughout each unit, and formally assessed at the end of each unit. If a student does no work on an assignment or assessment, the teacher shall assign a grade of zero.Approximate expectations for assignments and assessments:Homework- dailyClasswork- every other dayMajor Projects- once per unit (every two weeks)Major Unit Tests- once per unit (every two-three weeks) Parent Notification: Parents will be notified at least three weeks prior to the end of a marking period if a student is currently earning a failing grade. At any time, parents may check parentconnect. to see their student’s grade. Please contact the guidance office if you do not already have a login. Redo’s: Students shall have ONE additional chance to improve their score on a major test or assessment (as designated by the teacher). In order for this to happen the student MUST have submitted the original assignment ON TIME and set up a time with the teacher for re-teaching within 5 days of getting the graded assignment back. After the re-teaching, the student will have 10 days to resubmit the assignment. The higher grade will be the grade of record.
