We AffirmResolved: On balance, standardized testing is beneficial to K-12 education in the United States ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------We define the following terms:On balance: When all factors are taken into consideration (Oxford Dictionary)Standardized testing: Any form of test that requires all test takers to answer the same questions, and that doesn’t follow under NCLB, as this act is waived in 41 states and the use of common core has replaced that. Because we are talking “on balance,” we will be arguing over a cost benefit analysis throughout this debate. Therefore, if pro proves the benefits are greater than the costs, we will win this debate---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------It is beneficial towards the education systemAccuracyStandardized testing is an accurate way to assess data. Standardized testing is an effective way to assess and find data about students’ education and the curriculum accurately. This is important because teachers need this essential data for them to be able to help the students evolve and get better marks AND to distinguish the problems. Without standardized tests, the system would not be able to change and improve. According to Dr. Herbert Walberg, “When standardized tests are used appropriately, a great deal can be learned about how well schools function. Standardized tests can improve diagnosis of students’ and teachers’ strengths and weaknesses, in order to understand what they have to learn and what teachers have to teach.” Teachers can help students who are academically struggling, instead of allowing the problem to persist. This means that the education system relies on the data that the standardized tests get them and this helps the district understand problems they have to fix. Therefore, having standardized tests can efficiently fill the holes of the education system. It improves the quality of the curriculumStandardized tests sets the basic standards for quality education, and this can benefit to the students education and the curriculum overall. Without standardized testing, teachers are free to massively misuse class time. With standardized testing teachers must pivot their class time and curriculum plans around tests, which evaluate not only how well students have learnt but in-effect how well teachers have taught basic competencies - focusing on tests taking. Many curriculums which do not help students learn basic skills couldn’t consume most of the teacher’s time if standardized testing put pressure on the teacher to make sure their students knew basic competencies. Without standardized testing, it is hard to keep the quality curriculum, and of education. That information allows educators and policymakers to make better-informed conclusions about how much students are learning, which in turn allows them to make better-informed decisions about improving programs.” This means that the education system relies on the data that the standardized tests get them and this helps the district understand problems they have to exist. Because standardized testing is making teachers teach a course that is beneficial, we believe that standardized testing will have benefits to k-12 education.---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------Standardized testing gives fair groundsBias in school educationTeachers’ evaluation that comprises most of the U.S school education system, is generally biased. The study, commissioned by the Department for Education, found that staff allow “bias” and “personal feelings” to influence their marking. The research involved more than 2,000 teachers judging essays written by their 11 year old pupils over the course of a year because of their colour and gender. They discovered that in one in ten cases, teachers had marked the work too favourably. A 2014 research done by. Katherine L. Milkman in The University of Pennsylvania shows that business schools, women and minorities were ignored by professors more than twice as frequently as were white males, and even within the humanities, women and racial minorities were ignored 1.3 more times than white males. This is a problem. We can see from this that the education system is biased and because of this, they fail to do well in school and lose their opportunity to improve at any stance. To prevent bias from happening, we must have standardized testing to ensure that policy, which goes into my next subpointStandardized Testing is objectiveCareful standardization of tests and administration conditions help to ensure that all test takers are given a comparable opportunity to demonstrate what they know and how they can perform in the area being tested. In the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, Barbara S. Plake, wrote a page presented in the 2002 meeting of the Association of Test Publishers, which In this, it states requirements for a standardized test administration ,which includes maintaining a consistent testing environment and delivering the test according to rules and policies established by the test developer. Without them, policy makers would have to rely on tests scored by individual schools and teachers who have a vested interest in producing favorable results. Standardized testing promotes the accurate measurement by reducing the impact of irrelevant variance. Not only does it enable students to compete on an equal playing field, but it also allows universities to evaluate students based on a common set of accurate standards. Therefore, they are objective measures of student achievement. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------For these reasons, we urge for an affirmation ballot ................
