UNIVERSITY OF ARKANSAS OFFICE OF STUDENT ACTIVITIES Graduate Assistant for Student Government Leadership Position Description 2019-2020 Position Number- 9162 Nature of Responsibilities The Graduate Assistant will serve as a member of the advising team for the Associated Student Government. This role will develop knowledge and skills in practicing shared governance, program planning, budget management, advising, group facilitation, and assessment. The Graduate Assistant will gain insight into the operations of the University and assist students in collaborating with faculty, staff and students. The Graduate Assistant will have the opportunity to work directly with students from diverse backgrounds and positions. The Graduate Assistant will be supervised by the Assistant Director of Student Government Leadership within the Office of Student Activities and will contribute to the success of implementing the mission of the Office of Student Activities. Key Duties Include Serve as a graduate advisor for the Associated Student Government (ASG). Serve as advisor to one ASG Executive Officer and the programs and initiatives of their role. This includes holding weekly meetings with the officer, establishing learning outcomes for the position and providing guidance and assistance to the officer. The GA will advise on responsibilities of this officer as outlined in the ASG Code and Constitution. Serve as the advisor to the ASG student leaders involved in programmatic outreach of the ASG Executive Branch, particularly in the Executive Cabinet and the Freshman Leadership Forum. These programmatic branches look to engage university students in shared government through activities and leadership development programs. The GA will advise the appointed student leaders on recruitment, promotion, publicity, marketing, budgeting, program implementation, and program evaluation. Serve as advisor to the ASG Vice President and Cabinet Officers pertaining to any event planning, program development, and execution of ASG events. This includes holding pre and post event planning meetings with the officer, advising on budget management, and in consultation with the ASG Secretary, promotes and publicizes the event. More so, the graduate assistant will work in establishing learning outcomes for the position and providing guidance and assistance to the officer(s). Serve as a general advisor to student leaders involved in other branches of the Associated Student Government. Attend weekly Senate, Cabinet, and Executive Committee meetings as academic schedule permits. Assist the Assistant Director with conducting program evaluations and annual leadership development assessment. Communicate with peer institutions to benchmark programs, as needed and assigned. Maintain accurate historical records. Assist in preparing an annual report in accordance with established guidelines. Serve as a team member within the Office of Student Activities with departmental programs, events, and initiatives as assigned by supervisor. Attend Division of Student Affairs meetings, programs and professional development opportunities as assigned and approved by supervisor. Perform other tasks as assigned by supervisor. Minimum Qualifications Minimum qualifications include the completion of a Bachelor’s degree from an accredited university, and enrollment in a Graduate degree-seeking program at the University of Arkansas. Z:\Student Activities\GA Job Descriptions\ASG.docx Preferred Qualifications Preferred graduate degree programs are Higher Education Administration and Counselor Education. Undergraduate involvement in student activities, event coordination, student government and student organizations is preferred. Graduate Assistantship Package Monthly stipend of $1,230. The graduate assistantship is a 12-month with a possible reappointment for an additional year based on satisfactory performance. Stipends are distributed once a month. All in-state and out-of-state tuition is waived. The graduate assistant will be required to pay any applicable student fees not covered by tuition. Professional Development programs including a GA professional development series, Division of Student Affairs professional development series, and Human Resources development workshops. Professional Development funds of $750 for the first year and $1250 for the second year as a Graduate Assistant in OSA available for attendance at a professional conference pending of attendance at divisional professional development opportunities. Position requires a 20 hour work week. Evening and weekend hours are required. Professional office space with computer, printer, and other office equipment provided.
