Living FaithJames 2:14-26“What good is it, my brothers, if someone says he has faith but does not have works?” – James 2:14A recurring theme in the Bible is the promise of Living Water. Four rivers were flowing through Eden to water the garden. The River of Life will course through the New Jerusalem. Jesus declared He is the Living Water that fulfills all thirst and will flow through eternity. The Water of Life was, is, and will be a vital part of God’s creation.Speaking of Himself in comparison to the well of Jacob, Jesus told the Samaritan woman, ““Everyone who drinks of this water will be thirsty again, but whoever drinks of the water that I will give him will never be thirsty again. The water that I will give him will become in him a spring of water welling up to eternal life.” – John 4:13-14Our faith in Jesus makes us a part of His body, a living body. Our baptism into the Spirit of God is a symbol of our death to sin, turning toward the Father. And the rising up from the baptismal water is our commissioning to walk in newness of life. Not to walk is to be dead, or nearly dead.If we are a spring of water welling up to eternal life, we must be flowing through this time with the willingness to overflow into the lives of others. We are to relieve the thirst of people who do not know there is a fountain waiting for them.As a model for us, Jesus met the woman in her routine, as she was, talked with her about her life, offered hope. After several attempts to change the course of conversation, the woman yielded to the conviction of the Spirit. She went on to bear witness of the Christ and brought others to Jesus.Faith must live and walk. Faith must work. And our work is to harvest the field of those God has prepared. Our good works may open the gate to witness, and to demonstrate our faith to people who look for the character of God in us.
