Unit 1

(updated 5/2/2014)

For the Modeling E&M curriculum you need and interface to collect data. Vernier’s latest interface is LabQuest 2 but LabQuest and LabPro will work fine. Pasco sells Data Studio.

For graphing I recommend Logger Pro from Vernier. This program can be used to take data with probes and can be used for graphing. Vernier also sells a product called Graphical Analysis that is only for graphing.

One of the labs uses Microsoft Excel.

If you have CASTLE materials, the things I marked with an ** come in the CASTLE kit.

Unit 1 (Electric charge and electric fields)

Balloons

Scotch tape

5/8 “ PVC pipe (from a place like home depot, they sell 10 foot pieces for a little over $1.50)

5/8” x 3/8” acrylic rod (, found for $4.14 for 6 feet, also a shipping charge)

or below is a thinner wall

5/8” x 1/2” acrylic rod (, found for $2.46 for 6 feet, also a shipping charge)

Supplies to make electrophorus

Aluminum foil

Styrofoam plates

Aluminum piepans

Neon bulbs (NE-2H)

Graphite covered polystyrene spheres (I have not been able to find these so I buy the spheres online and “paint” them with graphite lubricant.) $2.89 for 12 spheres

Film canisters or pill bottles (if you do Leyden jars)

Desirable:

EM Field software (PAS) (OUT OF BUSINESS!:(

-Alternative is PhET simulation “Charge and Fields” which is free

VandeGraaff Generator (Most every science supplier has them) apprx $500

Charge sensor: ($75)

Unit 2 (Electric potential and electric energy)

Contour mapping kit ($23.25) Can also be made with a plastic storage container and modeling clay. (One per group)

**Bulb holders ($10.30 for 10)

($25.00 for 10)

**#48 “long” bulbs ($25 for 25)

(10 for $2.37)

**#14 “round” bulbs ($25 for 25)

(10 for $2.80)

**.025 F capacitors ($49 for 2)

.1 F capacitor ($39 ea)

(get 4 of these if you are studying capacitors, otherwise not needed)

Genecon generator ($56)

($59)

(One per group)

DC Power supply 12V There are many to choose from. Vernier sells one that works well and has built in voltmeter and ammeter.: ($199)

Do a search on Ebay for 30 V power supply. There are many 30V/5A power supplies for approximately $60. (One per group)

Digital multimeters Many places. Harbor Freight Tools has budget variety for approx. $5.

(One per group)

12” or 15” cooking dishes (10” wide)

(One per group)

½” x ¾” aluminum bar (cut pieces of 6-8” lengths)

½ or ¾” diameter aluminum rod, 1” long

(Two per group)

Modeling clay

**Alligator clip leads ($15 for 10)

($11.85 for 6)

I prefer to use leads with a banana plug on each end and slide on an alligator clip when needed.

($5.10 for 10)

Radio Shack ($3.49 for 10)

**Battery holders ($1.65)

($2.00)

D-Cell batteries (5 per group if doing capacitor labs), you could use a power supply instead

Unit 3: (Circuits)

Differential voltage probes ($39) one per lab group

Ceramic Power resistors: 5 ohm, 10 ohm, 20 ohm, 50 ohm, 100 ohm (4 of each) ($0.69 ea)

also available at Radio Shack

Nichrome wire or Kanthal wire: 25 gauge, 28 gauge, 31 gauge I buy mine on ebay. I do not need much (about a meter of each per group) and if you do a search for nichrome or Kanthal wire you can purchase reasonable quantities.

These gauges were chosen because a jump of 3 gauges is ½ the diameter. One source is Price is 5 to 10 dollars/100ft shipped.

The other equipment needed is already listed in unit 2 (power supplies, leads, multimeters)

Unit 4: (Magnetism and Electromagnetic induction)

**Compasses ($38 for 5)

Bar magnets

Iron filings

A cathode ray tube or an oscilloscope is nice to have

(Pair per group)

A very strong horseshoe magnet is nice to have.

Current balance ($279)

In the Unit 4 materials there are plans for a much cheaper homemade balance, made for under $10 each. Here is a picture of the homemade balance made by teachers in the workshop being used.)

Need a centigram or milligram balance for the lab with a capacity of at least 110g. I borrow them from the Chemistry department.

Solenoid

$145

Galvanometer ($11.50)

($8.75)

For Faraday’s Law lab

Vernier power amplifier for LabQuest ($199) plus an Instrumentation Amplifier ($59)

or a

Function generator ($679)
