Dazed by the vocabulary and choices? Then join me and I will reveal the mystery behind the tools and techniques of wood burning on a gourd. You will learn what to do with every tip you own! No matter how long you have used your burner you will get tips you can use in this class! We will then focus on the ball and the writing tip. Both are used differently than the others. I will introduce you to a technique. I call “surface burning” which is done at low temperatures and allows you to shade different parts of your design. We will practice on shards so there is no finished gourd. This burning technique is applied to a gourd in the following class. Shading with the Writing and Ball Tips. To master the skill, take both of these classes.Students should bring to class: wood burning tools and tips, including a writing tip and a ball tip. Medium sizes will work best. But how do you get them on a gourd beyond putting them around the border? The gourd is a three-dimensional surface so composition rules are helpful. We will look at different ways the focal point works on a round surface and learn how to move the viewer’s eye around the gourd with lines and patterns. I will teach you my method for creating a great composition every time and give you tips on why certain things work or don’t. I will teach the four patterns on the gourd. I will also demonstrate how I use metallic markers and metallic pigment powder to add shimmer and highlights to the marker color.Students should bring to class: wood burner & tips.
