5842024765Marketing, Communications, Impact and Insight OfficerJob Description and Background InformationIntroduction and BackgroundThis is an exciting opportunity to fill a significant new role with Community Enterprise, a leading social enterprise and community development consultancy and support provider. We provide support to third sector groups across Scotland and beyond and work with communities to build and sustain projects for the benefit of local people. We are a social enterprise ourselves. 100% of our profits are re-invested in supporting the further growth and development of voluntary and community organisations. Our Services and DivisionsOur focus is on developing sustainable communities through resilience using techniques including social enterprise, innovative fundraising and community empowerment. We have developed four cross-fertilising divisions. Our development team develops enterprise, communities and organisations including strategic thinking, market research, business planning, evaluations, organisational reviews, community plans and investment readiness. This division has a research element delivering research papers on subjects close to our ethos including community enterprise, asset transfer and community led regeneration. Our over-arching website has information about all our divisions, but this is a link directly to the work of the development team.We operate the first and biggest social enterprise strategic marketing and creative design and branding agency, called Bold. Now in its tenth year of development, its services include branding, design and print, web design and build and creative marketing strategy. We are a strategic part of the sustainable third sector. We were founding members of Social Enterprise Scotland, founding subscribers of the Voluntary Code for Social Enterprise and members of various national networks. We currently design and manage the social enterprise support map.As well as direct support, we try new things. We established a national on-line e-commerce site for social enterprises and are interested in how the digital space can develop the third sector. We currently operate a project called Creative Natives which changes the lives of young care leaves through creativity.The main office is in Livingston and we have offices in Glasgow and Edinburgh but work is across Scotland and beyond and are moving to a blended approach to work. The need for this RoleWe pride ourselves on our very strong reputation and the impact we have made and what we have learnt across Scotland over 30 years, but this is not well documented, articulated or communicated. One of the members of our Senior Management Team will have a responsibility for leading on a learning remit but will need help. We are therefore seeking someone with knowledge and experience to help us pull together our stories, our impact and our learning and communicate that across the sector in Scotland and beyond.At a time of growth, we have created this new post to capture and cascade impart and learning and to improve our profile sensitively and appropriately. We are looking for someone who loves stories of change, is an excellent communicator, is comfortable in the digital space but is also great with people, We believe that the wider sector in Scotland and beyond will not be aware of the depth of our work, and the value that is contained in communities and this needs to be addressed to benefit both ourselves and the Scottish third, community and social enterprise sectors. This will require time to understand the sector context, the organisation and will involve speaking to staff and board. Once finalised, to keep these as live documents, refreshed over time.To work within our brand and brand guidelines but clarify how we communicate with current clients, beneficiaries and partners. To support us to engage with new clients, beneficiaries and partners in a world changing in relation to a variety of policy areas.To encourage all staff and board to become involved in communication and marketing – to lead, co-ordinate support and encourage rather than be the only source of action.To train staff in the use of various platforms and techniques.Liaising with our Systems and Administrative Manager on data collection and liaising with our Development manager on gathering impact and learning.To work with the graphic designers on any printed or on-line materials that will be used and to lead on the production of new items from leaflets and impact statements to branded items.Lead on designing and delivering marketing campaigns within the team of designers and external consultants where appropriate.Evaluate and act on the impact of our marketing and communications work. Some knowledge of website analytics tools (e.g. Google Analytics etc) would be usefulWebsite Use and Digital WorkTo work with development officers and designers to pick up existing data and convert them into powerful case studies on the website To monitor and improve the use of the websiteWorking with the team to ensure there is a regular series of blogs, news and stories. Working with the Bold team to ensure the website is updated regularly with this new informationTo lead on the production of our monthly CommEnt newsletter with support from the whole team.To rationalise and standardise our ad hoc use of social media To lead on the use of twitter to communicate key stories, messages and informationTo explore and launch a Community Enterprise presence on instagram and other platforms (which may require different accounts for different divisions)Impact MeasurementTo utilise short term data that is gathered regularly, including on our project management system and via evaluation surveys, to create a picture of the impact of our work (all divisions)To advise on better data gathering systems and processesTo work with the Senior Management Team and the Development Manager in particular to find ways to communicate that impact.To work with external providers where appropriate and when the time is right to commission formal external impact assessment.To develop an understanding of systems, from Social Auditing to Social Capital Profiling and other systems, helping us embed a new way of long term impact assessment that is resource light and easy to use in communications.Learning and InsightTo work with the Development Manager to use the data above, and historical data to create learning that will be useful to the Scottish Third SectorPart of this may be to support the development of research papers, learning statements and round table discussions/events. General Admin TasksTo work closely with the admin team to use and record data.All other tasks which are commensurate with the spirit of this varied role.Person SpecificationWe are more interested in real skills, aptitude, values and how you would fit with the organisation than paper qualifications. Though we will consider qualifications of course, real skills and a track record in communications, marketing, social media, impact measurement, and a sensitivity to the sector in which we work is more important to us. This is not a grant funded post and needs someone that appreciates the heart of the third, community and social enterprise sectors, but understands the business imperative - that sales are crucial to our sustainability. The following is important;A strong understanding of on and off-line communication and marketing techniques and processes. We need someone to take what we have and evolve it into something better.The willingness to undertake a variety of tasks at different levels as part of a team - someone who is happy to “muck in”.A collaborator and partnership builder, both within Community Enterprise and with our partnersPositive and hard-working with a proven track record of raising the awareness of an organisation and their work. Ideally 2-3 years’ experience working in a Marketing and Communications role.A sensitivity to images and their use in the right context.Experience of having tracked impact, ideally in the third sector, and with finding effective and innovative ways to communicate that impact.Excellent communication and people skills, and a personality that partners and clients warm to and that engenders respect and confidenceUnderstanding/experience of the third sector and ethical enterprises would be advantageous but not vital but a commitment to our ethos and values is non-negotiable.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
