Dig 1940

Sunday, 10 March 2013

To mark the 70th anniversary of 1940, presenter and archaeologist Jules Hudson takes us on a journey of discovery into Britain's darkest, and

in the words of Winston Churchill 'finest hour'.

BATTLE OF BRITAIN

Jules Hudson and his team are off the Isle of Wight diving on HMS Borealis a ship from Convoy Peewit sunk in the openings stages of the Battle

of Britain. Using previously unseen colour film from 1940 he tells the heartbreaking story of two pilots killed in the Battle of Britain and

the glamorous woman at the centre of both their lives. The team head to Chesil beach as they attempt to recover the remains of an RAF Hurricane

fighter plane shot down in August 1940 at the height of the battle.

Compass: Beating Cyberbullying

Sunday, 10 March 2013

To mark Australia's National Day of Action Against Bullying and Violence COMPASS looks at two campaigns that are helping students recognise and

deal with cyberbullying by focusing on the role a bystander can play.

Up to one in ten Australian students has now reported being cyberbullied. Some severe cases have led to suicides.

Through the anonymity of cyberspace - email, Facebook, Twitter and texts - a malicious hate campaign can be mounted in minutes by one, or any

number of bullies, leaving a victim hurt, demeaned, excluded and isolated. Now, new research shows if just one person stands up, they can

change the behaviour of the online bullying culture and help shut it down.

Project Rockit was launched in Victorian schools when cyberbullying was recognised as being as harmful as physical bullying. The project

encourages bystanders to support someone who is being cyberbullied.

The second campaign is BackMeUp, launched in high schools by the Australian Human Rights Commission.

Media personality Ruby Rose, 26, is its ambassador."Honestly the second I heard of it I thought, ‘Why didn't somebody think of this earlier?’

says Ruby who was verbally and physically bullied at school, and subsequently suffered severe depression.

The BackMeUp campaign also encourages bystanders to take a stand in various ways - posting a support message, disagreeing online with the

bullies’ message, or offering a kind word to the victim in person.

David Attenborough’s Galapagos

Sunday, 10 March 2013

More than 150 years after Charles Darwin formulated his ground-breaking theory of evolution on the remote archipelago, Attenborough explains

how life on the islands has continued to evolve in biological isolation, examining how the ever-changing volcanic landscape has given birth to

species and sub-species that exist nowhere else in the world.

This week he looks at how the islands of the Galapagos rose explosively from the ocean four million years ago.

Although life would not seem viable, the first arrivals landed as the fires still burned. David Attenborough traverses the islands for the

animals and plants that descend from these pioneers: from the sea birds carrying the seeds that made a tentative foothold on these rocks, to

equator-dwelling penguins and a dancing bird with blue feet.

This is a story of treacherous journeys, life-forms that forged unlikely companionships, and surviving against all odds. It is the story of an

evolutionary melting pot in which anything and everything is possible.

Rev.

Sunday, 10 March 2013

This series sees cassock-chaser Adoha's (Ellen Thomas) crush on Adam reach new heights when he inadvertently rescues her from a mugger; his

competitive streak unleashed in an interfaith football tournament; his having to perform an exorcism in a nursing home; and some very special

surprise cameos appearing at St Saviour's.

From a city banker attending AA in the church who causes Adam to examine his own financial dire straits, to a pretty young trainee vicar whose

brilliance pushes him to the limit, to new elderly parishioner Joan with a colourful past and a haunted bedroom. Not to mention Adam's far from

angelic goddaughter who comes to stay for the weekend.

In this episode, a heatwave has hit London and Adam (Tom Hollander) can't sleep. He's not the only one plagued by nightmares - elderly

parishioner Joan (Sylvia Syms) has just moved into a nursing home and is convinced her new room is haunted.

Adam finds himself having to justify believing in the Holy Ghost, but not spooks. And there are demands at home too - Alex (Olivia Colman) and

Adam have a pint-sized house guest in the form of Adam's difficult goddaughter Enid.

Artscape: Anatomy

Tuesday, 12 March 2013

ANATOMY is a multi-award winning series of documentaries which explore themes of identity and the human body in the creative process. The

fourth series consists of three unique stories. Each week a bold new filmmaker tells the story of a different artist. The films are variously

funny, playful, confronting and in the end, illuminative to the role of the body in artistic pursuits.

BRAIN is an intimate and moving documentary that follows the inspiring story of artist and poet, Jamie Daddo and his relationship with his

identical twin brother, TV presenter Andrew Daddo.

At 18, Jamie was hit by a car and left severely brain damaged. Unable to walk and struggling to communicate, he started painting and writing

poetry to help express his thoughts and experiences to those around him.

Despite the enormous physical and mental changes in Jamie, he and Andrew remain best friends. Over three days the brothers spend time in

Jamie's studio, joking around and talking about their lives, both past and present, as Jamie paints Andrew for the Moran Portrait Prize. They

still refer to each other by their childhood nicknames, Jub (Jamie) and Anoo (Andrew). At times it's as though they speak their own language

and they often finish each other's sentences. They share stories about growing up and speak to each other for the first time about how the

accident impacted their lives.

This is the story of a remarkable man, someone who has overcome a near death tragedy to forge an incredible career and a life filled with love,

joy, laughter and hope.

It is also a story of the special relationship that can exist between twins.

The Agony Of Life

Wednesday, 13 March 2013

Career and career-legacy is something that dominates our thinking and our Aunts and Uncles are successful enough to tell you how to have a

fulfilling career, remain calm under pressure and maintain a sensible work-life balance. But what about the more difficult questions of how to

keep your dignity when sacked, reach the top without screwing other people over and surviving a workplace or public scandal with as much grace

as possible?

No stone will be left unturned as Australia's funniest and brightest take us through the most important stages of existence - from child to

adult, to creating and supporting families, to building and managing careers. And what after that? Should we sit on a hill and contemplate the

wording of our epitaph, or travel the world? The good news is we don't need to worry about that because the Aunts and Uncles will be doing the

worrying for us.

Canberra Confidential

Thursday, 14 March 2013

Nothing much happens in Canberra, never has. That's what most people think. ABC presenter Annabel Crabb is set to change your mind in

Canberra Confidential, a revealing and whimsical rummage through a century of secrets in our nation's capital. While Canberra celebrates its

centenary in March, there's no better time to lay bare its past scandals and secrets.

Annabel dishes the dirt on a series of almost forgotten scandals, spectacular political skulduggery and espionage sagas that rocked the nation.

Along the way, she meets with players, prime ministers, reporters and the victims of some of the nation's greatest scandals.

Among the surprising gems is the mystery of ‘Rosie's Suitcase’, the murky insides of which throw light on the after-hours temptations for our

1930s federal politicians. The X-rated contents are a blackmailer's dream…and maybe that's exactly what was intended. Annabel concludes the

written confessions of Rosie and Joan's liaisons may well have been part of the nation's first political dirt file.

Another coup is David Combe, who breaks a 30-year silence about the events of 1983 when, after a successful career as the ALP's Federal

Secretary, he was dragged into a spy scandal that sent the newly elected Hawke Government into a spin. Over a Russian salad, he tells Annabel

about his friendship with Valery Ivanov, his mate from the Soviet Embassy, and the drunken conversations between them that ASIO was secretly

taping.

The Midwives

Thursday, 14 March 2013

The community midwives of Manchester's Saint Mary's Hospital are responsible for almost 5,000 newborn babies every year. Every day they are

trying to spot the mums who might need more than just a cursory examination - determining which mums will cope easily with a new baby and which

ones might have a struggle.

For 10 days after each baby is born, they go into the homes of new parents to offer help and make sure that mums are well and that the babies

are being properly looked after.

Midwife Joyce is concerned about single mum-to-be Fizah because of her complicated family background. Joyce has referred Fizah to the

Vulnerable Babies Service, so they can keep an eye on how she is coping as a new mum.

Midwife Farhana is looking after Monique, who is also single and was homeless until recently. But she has to drop everything to go and help a

woman who has chosen to give birth in her own front room.

Meanwhile, the mother that midwife Di is supposed to be looking after has gone missing the day after being discharged from hospital.

With Britain in the middle of the biggest baby boom in 40 years, this film looks at how midwives look after new mums and new babies who might

be at their most vulnerable.

Who's Been Sleeping In My House?: Roleystone

Friday, 15 March 2013

Every house has a tale to tell. In this second series of Who's Been Sleeping In My House? archaeologist Adam Ford ventures into homes across

Australia to reveal the hidden stories and histories of the people who once lived in them.

Each episode is an investigative journey as Adam attempts to separate fact from fiction, piecing together a past that's not always recorded in

the history books.

This week Adam heads to a home in a Perth hillside suburb where he uncovers a chilling story of wartime espionage.

Who's Been Sleeping In My House? peels back the layers of the extraordinary lives of everyday Australians - people who lived, dreamed, loved,

bore children and moved on in the great cycle of life. As Adam unravels the past, the history that lives between the bricks and mortar becomes

our history, containing remarkable hidden insights into the generations who have walked before us.

The Doctor Blake Mysteries: Bedlam

Friday, 15 March 2013

A psychiatric inmate, David Hoyle, is the clear culprit in the fatal stabbing of a nurse at Blackhill Asylum. When Chief Superintendent Matthew

Lawson and Police Surgeon Dr Lucien Blake arrive at the crime scene, Hoyle is having electro convulsive therapy.

Still confused after the shock treatment, Hoyle tells Blake and Lawson he thinks he killed nurse Violet Ashby but cannot recall the incident.

Lawson says Hoyle was found crouched near the body holding a large kitchen knife. However Dr Blake is not convinced.

A voluntary patient at the institution, Oriel Vogel, surprises Dr Blake when she turns up unannounced at his surgery with a painting she's done

of him. She has also done a moody portrait of David Hoyle, which interests Blake.

Back at the asylum Blake tests his theory in a rather unorthodox manner.

At home, Blake consoles his ego with a bottle of Scotch whisky and ends up terribly drunk. When Jean helps him to bed late at night, she takes

the opportunity to read his private letters from Singapore. She finds a photo of Blake with his family, dated September 1940.

Catalyst: On The Road

Mapping the Ocean Floor

Much of our underwater domain remains unexplored and unknown. In many ways, we know less about the seafloor habitats than we do about the surface of Mars. But how can we protect these precious environmental assets for future generations if we don't know what is out there? The simple answer is we can't. But a team of pioneering scientists are on the case. They are delving below the surface to uncover the secrets of this uncharted frontier. Anja, Derek and Simon hit the high seas with the project's lead researcher, Dr Daniel Ierodiaconou, to see what lies beneath Victoria's coastal waters.

Koalas

In the Great Otway National Park and surrounding private land, there are as many as 18 koalas per hectare - the highest density ever recorded. The national average in Australia is one koala for every two hectares. But this giant koala colony is eating itself out of their habitat by literally stripping the forest bare. Wildlife biologist Dr Desley Whisson has been studying the population to build a picture of how the koala-habitat system works and develop ways to preserve the koalas and the habitat they depend on. The intrepid trio join in the field work and get close and cuddly with some baby koalas.

Cape Otway Lighthouse

This picture perfect location sets the scene for our reporters to examine how ships are kept safe along this notoriously dangerous coastline. Derek examines the workings of a lighthouse from inside the lens (literally) and Simon demonstrates modern navigation systems.
