Civic Engagement Through Media – Course Syllabus2019-2020Teacher: Dave Salzer david.salzer@mpls.k12.mn.us Phone: 612-668-1300 ext. 81314Course Objectives:Civic Engagement through Media is a year long Individuals and Societies course that operates within a community partnership between Thomas Edison High School and Minneapolis Television Network. As a result of organization between these Northeast neighbors Edison can successfully uphold its mission to prepare career ready students, and MTN can guarantee youth access, participation, and voice to professional media. In doing so, students will explore what constitutes media, how to evaluate media, and why it is important to understand how we are influenced by media. This exploration will occur in three distinct ways. The first will be traditional, overt, standards based instruction and lessons. The second will be through our own media production and broadcast. This will serve as civic engagement for both our school and community, as well as an opportunity to learn MTN certified career ready skills. The final method will be through self-analysis and critique. Statistical data will be collected and reviewed to prove our successes (or failures) as well as the power of narrative, voice, and media. Course TextbookThe explicit instruction of government and literacy standards will be instructed through compiled resources from the Minnesota’s “Learning Law and Democracy Foundation”. Their reputation is built upon decades of collaboration between the Minnesota legal community, state lawmakers, and government teachers throughout the state. The collected resources will provide us with the depth and challenge of an appropriate high school history course. The text will act as the skeleton of this course; as it will provide us with structure. However, personal engagement, participation, and effort, and willingness to take risks will bring life to the skeleton (text). Course MaterialsThe vast majority of course materials belong to the course. It is our responsibility to treat this equipment appropriately and to follow all procedures. This includes, but is not limited to check out, check in, cabinet organization, charging, hard drives, and SD card protocol. If care, effort, and attention are given we can continue to grow our resources! In addition to these materials, we will be traveling as a class to MTN Studios (four blocks south of Edison) once each quarter. Parental off campus signatures, as well as media release will need to be signed. Class Expectations:RESPECT:peers, classroom facilities, equipment, guests, and teacher**Violation will result in a reminder, a verbal reminder, a brief student/teacher meeting before or after class, a call home, an extensive meeting with an administrator.
