I
I. Course Number and Title:
MAC 2312 – Calculus II
II. Prerequisites for the Course:
MAC 2311 with a minimum grade of C or equivalent.
III. General Course Information:
A continuation of MAC 2311, topics in this course include: the definition of definite integral and applications such as area between curves, volumes and work; techniques of integration such as integration by parts, substitution; more advanced applications of integration such as first-order differential equations, arc length, area of a surface and applications in biology and economics; infinite sequences and series. This course will emphasize conceptual understanding and modeling of physical phenomena, and will use computer technology as an aid to the modeling process. The TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator will be an integral part of this course and is required.
IV. Requirements for the Students:
The student should read all new topics before they are discussed in class and complete the homework assignments on time. The professor will devote a portion of classroom activities to the solution of any “troublesome” exercises. The student is expected to spend between 6 and 9 hours per week on reading the text, reviewing and/or rewriting notes, solving problems - in general, STUDYING! Calculators and computers may be used to solve problems.
Students are strongly encouraged to participate in classroom discussions and to be prepared to demonstrate the solutions to assigned homework problems to the class.
V. Absence Policy:
Students are expected to attend all class periods. There are no “allowable cuts”. Students should recognize the very important sequential nature of this course, and that each absence tends to create a learning gap which can be very difficult to bridge. An absence in a four-hour course that meets twice a week can have a disastrous effect on the student’s progress and understanding in the course
VI. Grading Procedure:
A. Grading Criteria:
In-class Worksheets and Quizzes 100
Homework Notebooks 100
Chapter Exams (2@ 100 pts) 200
Final Exam 100
500
B. Percentage Ranges for Letter Grades
93 - 100 = A
90 - 92 = A-
87 - 89 = B+
83 - 86 = B
80 - 82 = B-
77 - 79 = C+
70 - 76 = C
60 - 69 = D
0 - 59 = F
C. Homework Notebooks:
At each exam, the homework problems for the sections covered on that exam are due. The problems should be in a notebook. Each problem should be clearly labeled as to section and problem number. The notebook grade will consist of two parts: graded problems and total attempt. A few of the even-numbered problems will be graded for a score from 0% to 50%. The other half of the grade will consist of a determination of whether a good-faith effort is displayed. Included in that determination will be the number of problems attempted, the solutions (not the answers), and the absence of any similarity to published answers. The grade for this will be either 0% or 50%.
All homework must be submitted on date due. Homework submitted after that date will NOT be accepted.
D. Incompletes (I):
Incompletes will be given only for extreme emergency conditions and must be approved by the professor before the final examination begins. The student must be doing passing work at the time the request is made, and must reasonably expect to complete the work within three weeks after the close of the semester.
E. Make-Up Exam:
Make-up exams will be EXTREMELY DIFFICULT! They are to be avoided whenever possible.
F. Special Needs:
Students with special needs must make them known to the professor at the beginning of the semester.
VII. Textbook Requirements:
“Calculus, Early Transcendental Functions” 4th edition by Larson, Hostetler and Edwards. ISBN#: 0618606246.
TI-83 or TI-84 graphing calculator.
