left000Newsletter – July 2020From the deskIn gathering information over the past month for various project proposals I have read many articles and even came across the reason why I am in this business today! Many prospective clients are looking for a “New Normal” a “New Start” a “New Lifestyle”.In 1980 Fish farmer Magazine published an article on Barony Agricultural College’s Aquaculture Course. I attended this college in 1985 and 1986.left464185000 The college’s aim was to create the necessary, practically trained fish farming graduates with the necessary skills to go onto farms as skilled workers some would eventually become farmers and farm managers and farm owners. I have been a passionate advocate of this approach to teaching, developing and mentoring anyone with the slightest interest in Tilapia Farming. Today I completed a survey for African Aquaculture Training and Education. It highlights the need and the opportunity that we can create within the sector. This is the foundation for building the sector. We are in discussions to develop a “Tilapia Center of Excellence” (TCE) based on the model of “Wet Hands Training”, developing the principles, the needs and wants of the farmer and of the sector. The difference is that from the TCE resources will be made available to assist a new farmer to get established, productive and active in the value chain. Of course, this will take time, so in the meantime we encourage those who want to enter the sector to engage with us and come for a tour and training. Start your journey in tilapia farming. See the Barony Agriculture College article on this link. Subscribe to,fishfarmer-FarmersIt has been a long and cold winter in Southern Africa. I hope that you and your fish have survived and that you will soon see the warmer weather and the long days of summer. One of our farms is fortunate to be well set up for the weather as well as for load shedding. The greenhouses are covered with poly carbonate clear sheeting and whilst the ambient temperatures on site were 5 Deg C at 10:00 the inside temperature was at 32 Deg C and water temperatures at 24 Deg C! The site is also completely off the grid and run off a solar system and batteries. Not everyone is as fortunate enough to have a set up like this. The farmers will need to make sure that their setup caters for winter and if not for full production then at least secure enough to maintain some growth. As the sector develops and more farmers are forced off the grid, financing will cater for solar systems on farms. In fact, there are more and more companies offering fully funded “Power Purchase” solutions. These must be at economically viable capacities for the solar companies. Watch this space! We are looking for stocks of all species of fingerlings and breeding fish for other farmers. Should you have stock available and you need a market and some income please let us know. We want more farmers farming more fish in more locations, feeding more people. A steady cash flow is better than none.It is interesting that marketers and Agri-processors are looking at the sector with interest. The sector will need to ramp up capacity to meet the demand for fish. If you imagine that the poultry industry grew and developed with a model that supports the value chain, then the Tilapia sector already has the roadmap to success. Come and discuss with us where you want to fit into the value chain and what would be required to get you there. We have not raised the price of the APU for 4 years and sadly our suppliers have informed us of increases in raw materials and costs. The new price at a 10% increase, for an APU is R39052.00 ex vat ex works Jhb. TrainingPlease see below the scheduled training dates to the end of 2020. These are not confirmed and not the only dates available – we are very flexible to your timing and other commitments. We engage with individuals, groups and across the borders clients regarding the opportunities and needs for training. We are also happy to host farmers days and workshops at a “Host Farmers” farm or venue – also at schools, NGO’s, Universities and Community projects; indeed, anywhere where fish can play an important role in providing food security and nutrition. The Aquaculture Production Unit (APU) system is purchased by the “Host Farmer” and this will be established on the farm during the farmers day. This demonstrates to those present, the installation, operation, stocking, feeding, water quality management and fish farming aspects of the Aquaculture Production Unit (APU) The (Host Farmer) now has “Skin in The Game” and can develop knowledge and skills and create support from other farmers and customers within the community. Most investors would want to see not only a business plan and pitch before investing but also a level of understanding, knowledge, practical learning within Tilapia production. Practical skills within the sector and within the African Market are exceedingly difficult to obtain. There are few farms and production methods are in ponds and cages. Farms are remote, and generally the amount of work and learning one can do comes from 6-9-month production cycles. With the APU you are learning in situ every day - observing, monitoring, feeding, testing, recording, analyzing, and questioning every day.??David Fincham Aquaculture Training Dates 2020??MonthDate Start?Date FinishJuly27to30August24to27September28to01-OctOctober26to29November30to03-DecAll training fees to be paid in advance.???StockThose looking for stock are reminded that permits must be in place and that we require 10 working days’ notice to arrange orders and prepare fish for collection/delivery.We do hold stocks of the following;Black/Silver NMT (Natural Male Tilapia) O.niloticus – Bred from Til-Aqua parent stockRed NMT (Natural Male Tilapia) O.niloticus – Bred from Til-Aqua parent stockRed O.mossambicus (Mozambique Tilapia) (Blou Kurper) stock Ex Rivendell Hatchery parent stockTilapia coptodon (Tilapia Rendalli) (Rooibors Kurper) available by arrangementCatfish Fingerlings available by arrangementO.niloticus fingerlings from GIFT Parent Stock MT Treated, available by arrangementOur prices vary with the size of the order, and size of the fish.
