English III Slave Narrative Research Project
Our Realism Project will focus on the narratives written by escaped slaves. All projects are due October 28th End of Block to present October 29-30th. Your project is worth 1 test grade.
You will be working with your group to explore the lives of four Americans who started their lives in slavery and, through the slave narratives, to learn about the Realism time period.
Once you have done your research, you will be putting together a PowerPoint presentation that will educate the class about your subjects’ lives, how they connect, and how their stories demonstrate the Tenets (ideas/rules) of Realism.
Each group will:
• Design a PowerPoint presentation that includes a Works Cited slide that lists all websites used for information and for graphics
• Present the PowerPoint presentation to the class
• Email me the PowerPoint
Each person should contribute:
• Slides summarizing what happens in your subject's narrative
• At least two slides that have quotes from the narrative and an explanation of how each quote illustrates one of the tenets of Realism
• Slides should be attractive, easy to read, free from conventions errors, and have graphics
Tenets/Ideas of Realism
• People are portrayed as being manipulated by forces of society and nature beyond their understanding or control
• Man is basically an animal and will do anything to survive
• Man is an insignificant speck in the universe
• Nature is an overwhelming force that controls a person's destiny
• The prospects of life are determined by the accident of your birth and succeeding coincidences
• God, if he exists, is indifferent to human struggle and human worth
• The odds of life are stacked against you
• Man is ennobled to succeed in the face of such odds
