Although Ford suggests that this component is removable while the engine is installed in teh vhicle, depending on teh particular options with which your Aerostar is equipped, working clearance may be extremely tight and this procedure may be much easier to perform with the engine removed. Before commencing, read through this procedure and make certain enough clearance, or working room, exists with the engine in the vehicle; if there is not enough space, the engine should be removed.
REMOVAL & INSTALLATION
3.0L Engines
See Figures 1 through 12
1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
2. Remove the timing chain cover, as described earlier in this section.
3. Turn the crankshaft until the crankshaft timing marks and the camshaft timing marks are aligned. The timing marks should be in a straight up and down line with each other, they should also be at their closest positions to each other as possible (the crankshaft mark should be at the 12 o'clock position and the camshaft timing mark should be at the 6 o'clock position). The engine should be at Top Dead Center (TDC) when these marks are aligned.
4. Remove the camshaft sprocket attaching bolt and washer. Slide both sprockets and the timing chain forward and remove them as an assembly.
5. After both sprockets and the chain are removed from the engine, the chain can be removed from the two sprockets.

To install:
6. Clean the timing cover and oil pan sealing surfaces of all gasket material and silicone sealer.
The timing chain sprocket bolt has has a drilled oil passage for timing chain lubrication. Clean the oil passage with solvent. If damaged, do not replace with a standard bolt.
7. Slide the new timing chain with sprockets on the shafts as an assembly with the timing marks aligned as illustrated. Install the camshaft bolt and washer and tighten it to 41-51 ft. lbs. (55-70 Nm). Apply oil to the timing chain and sprockets after installation.
8. Install the timing chain cover and a new front oil seal, as described earlier in this section.
9. Connect the negative battery cable.
