With Thanksgiving right around the corner, it is time to think about what we are truly thankful for in our lives. As an administrator I am thankful for students who cheerfully work hard to learn, parents who encourage, and teachers and all staff members who are dedicated and truly care about each child. I am truly grateful for the opportunities I have experienced here over the past seven years. Thank you for your continuous support of Harford Hills Elementary School. Most of all, thank you for your wonderful children that we are so proud to teach every day. Have a wonderful Thanksgiving!

This month we have several dates to remember. Please mark your calendar and come to school to celebrate American Education Week. Also, I strongly encourage you to attend a conference with your child’s teacher. Parent/Teacher conferences are a great opportunity to review your child’s progress both academically and socially during the first marking period with the teacher. Thank you for your continued support as we make our way into the second marking period of the 2019-2020 school year.

AMERICAN EDUCATION WEEK: NOVEMBER 18-21

The 2019 American Education Week theme is “Reach. Educate. Inspire”. Again, this year rather than having Open House on one day, parents/guardians and grandparents are invited to visit classrooms as follows:

• Monday, November 18 – Grade 1

• Tuesday, November 19 - Grade 3 and Kindergarten

• Wednesday, November 20 - Grade 5 and Pre-Kindergarten (AM & PM)

• Thursday, November 21 - Grade 2 and Grade 4

We hope that many parents/guardians and grandparents will join us for a firsthand experience of what the school day is like for their child/grandchild. We know that the visit will be a special experience.

*If you are unable to visit when your child’s grade level visit is scheduled, you are welcome to visit on

another day during American Education Week.

General Information for American Education Week:

• BCPS requires all visitors to sign in at schools using the Raptor system by having their driver’s license

or government ID scanned. If you are planning to visit Harford Hills Elementary School for American Education Week, please complete, and return the blue pre-registration form (sent home in Thursday folders) by Thursday, November 7. This information will help us expedite the visitor sign-in process so that visitors can get to classrooms more quickly.

• Due to the increased enrollment at Harford Hills Elementary School and for security reasons, we are unable to invite parents/guardians and grandparents to join the children for lunch in the cafeteria or lobby during American Education Week.

• Please turn off your cell phone and refrain from texting when you are in the building.

• We request that only adults visit classrooms during American Education Week in order to limit distractions to our students and prevent disruption to the instructional program.

CONGRATULATIONS

Congratulations to our building operations staff: Building Operations Supervisor Jerry Schenning and Building Operations Workers Nate Ebon, Della Pate, and Andre Wilson! This amazing team recently received the BCPS Teamwork Achievement Award for their excellent work performance, support, and teamwork. They work diligently to help Harford Hills Elementary School maintain a clean and safe learning environment. We truly appreciate everything these four dedicated staff members do for our school.

ANNUAL CANNED FOOD DRIVE

The annual canned food drive will be held from Monday, November 4 through Friday,

November 15. Please encourage your children to participate in this worthy cause and help

others in our community.

THE GIVING TREE

Harford Hills Elementary School will accept donations of mittens, hats,

and scarves to hang on our “Giving Tree” from Monday, November 25,

through Wednesday, December 18. Thank you in advance for your generosity.

ARRIVING AT SCHOOL ON TIME IS IMPORTANT

Thank you for making the daily effort to ensure your child is on time for school. Students who are late for school - even a few minutes late - often start the day at a disadvantage. By the time homeroom begins at 8:50 A.M., many teachers are already taking attendance and passing out information to students. If you are bringing a student to school late, please remember that you must come into the main office with the child in order for him/her to receive a late pass.

ARRIVAL AND DISMISSAL REMINDERS

We want to remind parents that students who are walkers or car riders should plan to arrive at school at 8:40 A.M. Prior to that time, there is no adult supervision. We also want to remind

parents/guardians who need to park and come into the school in the morning to park in

the back parking lot. For safety reasons, we ask all students and parents/guardians to use

the sidewalks and crosswalks at all times. Please do not walk between parked or loading

buses in the front circular drive. Please help us teach your child how to be safe.

ABSENCE NOTES

When students are absent from school, it is important that upon their return, they bring an absence note informing the teacher of the reason for their absence. Without a note, the absence is marked “unlawful.”

EARLY DISMISSAL

We thank all parents/guardians who make the effort to schedule outside appointments after the school day. Parents/guardians are discouraged from signing out students at the end of the day just prior to the walkers and car riders being dismissed. This is a hectic time of day for students and staff because over 400 children are being dismissed. Remember: Children may be released only to individuals whose names have been listed on the school emergency card by the parent/guardian. Proper identification will be required of any individual requesting to pick up students or sign them out for dismissal.

ATTENDANCE PHONE SYSTEM

Harford Hills utilizes the NTI communication phone system to call parents /guardians

when a student is absent. This automated system will automatically call families

every morning when students are absent. We need your active support to achieve

our school goals, and your children need your help to attend school every day and to

arrive on time. Providing a safe, supportive, and positive learning environment for your

children is paramount. We appreciate all that you do for your children, and we look

forward to working as a team to improve achievement for all students.

SCHOOL MESSENGER CALLS TO PARENTS

Parents/Guardians will sometimes receive a call from the school system, Ms. Guild, or other school staff members for the purpose of providing important information. This is an automated system that allows us to make one call that goes out to either the homes of all students or to the homes of selected students. We appreciate your listening to these messages.

SCHOOL EMERGENCY INFORMATION

It is vital that we have current information for every student to ensure a safe learning environment for every child attending our school. To help us keep our records accurate, should any information on the forms change during the school year, please stop by the office to request a new form or send a note with the necessary changes. It is imperative that we have reliable and accurate information (correct work, home and cell phone numbers) should an emergency develop. Also, we utilize the NTI Communication System to contact families and provide timely and important school information. Please note that school personnel will release your children only to the people whose names you have listed on the forms. Thank you for your cooperation.

FROM THE SCHOOL COUNSELOR’S OFFICE

The Virtues Project

During November, our Virtues Project is focusing on the virtue of thankfulness.

Thankfulness can be defined as the following:

• Being grateful for what you have

• Appreciating the little things that happen around you every day.

Demonstrating the virtue of Thankfulness helps people find the good in whatever happens to them; have a positive attitude; and keeps them from complaining when they don’t have everything their own way. We encourage students to practice Thankfulness by showing appreciation when someone does something kind for them; focusing on the good things in their life; and seeing difficulties as opportunities for learning and growth. We ask for your support to reinforce these ideas at home and in the community, as we promote them at school.

Bullying Prevention Month

Last month, Harford Hills Elementary School participated in activities for Bullying Prevention Month.  Students reviewed ideas for identifying and handling bullying behaviors and discussed ways to demonstrate positive behaviors with others.  Below is a list of resources that you can access as parents/guardians for bullying prevention:
