CCLI 2704322Opening PrayerTime for Young ChristiansIntroduction:(not on screen)Many years ago, thousands of years ago, people in the northern hemisphere were thought to have gathered wreaths of evergreen and lit fires as signs of hope in the coming spring and renewed light. The custom was kept alive by Christians, and by the 16th century the Advent wreath had gradually spread across many parts of the world.Today, Advent is the period of four Sundays leading up to Christmas. It’s also the time when days are shortest, when cold settles in, and when people need the cheer brought by the promise of light and warmth. As we light one more candle each Sunday, the Advent wreath symbolizes our waiting experience. Week by week, the candles remind us that the darkness of fear and hopelessness recedes as more and more light is shed into the world. The flame of each new candle reminds us that more is yet to come. Lighting the candle today is Randy, Leslie, Evelyn and Natalie Klein at home in Syracuse. Candlelighting video here scripture only on screenAdvent is a season of waiting, of expectation, and of longing. On this First Sunday of Advent, we light one candle on our wreath: the candle that represents Joy. Isaiah 61:1-4, 1061:1 The spirit of the Lord GOD is upon me, because the LORD has anointed me; he has sent me to bring good news to the oppressed, to bind up the brokenhearted, to proclaim liberty to the captives, and release to the prisoners;61:2 to proclaim the year of the Lord's favor, and the day of vengeance of our God; to comfort all who mourn;61:3 to provide for those who mourn in Zion-- to give them a garland instead of ashes, the oil of gladness instead of mourning, the mantle of praise instead of a faint spirit. 61:10 I will greatly rejoice in the LORD, my whole being shall exult in my God; for he has clothed me with the garments of salvation, he has covered me with the robe of righteousness, as a bridegroom decks himself with a garland, and as a bride adorns herself with her jewels.Advent is a season of watchfulness: we listen and keep vigil for the promise of things to come. We speak and sing about the promise of the Savior, as reflected in the words of familiar hymns.*O come, o come, Emmanuel….People look east, the time is near; love, the guest, is on the way….There’s a star in the east...it will lead to the place where Christ was born . . . These are the songs of the hopeful, songs of faith; these hymns encourage us to practice being open to Possibility.Joy is one of the qualities that, if not yet present within us, will come to us in its own time. This light of Joy, then, doesn’t require that you experience joy now, today, in your immediate surroundings. Instead, it’s a reminder to wait for it with faithfulness that overshadows pain and cynicism.May the lighting of this candle bring us patience, grant us faith, draw us closer to joy.OfferingPrayers of the PeopleThe Lord’s Prayer “The Lone Wild Bird” Marci Perini-Bowers, SopranoWords: Sts. 1-3 Henry Richard McFayden, alt. Norrix“Come, Thou Long Expected Jesus” #196 Hymnal1. Come, thou long-expected Jesus, born to set thy people free; from our fears and sins release us, let us find our rest in thee. Israel's strength and consolation, hope of all the earth thou art; dear desire of every nation, joy of every longing heart.2. Born thy people to deliver, born a child and yet a King, born to reign in us forever, now thy gracious kingdom bring.
