Every year National Underwriter ranks the top P&C insurers based on the average combined ratio of each company and their

!net premiums.

This year's rankings -- as are all year's

!rankings -- are based on 2013 numbers.

The publication uses data from SNL Financial. It shows a relatively catastrophe free year helped everyone. The average combined ratio for the top 100 insurance groups fell to 96.64. That's a drop of 6.37

!over the 2012 numbers. The top-10 firms saw a 5.59 drop. !Here are the three most improved:

? Liberty Mutual saw the best results with a combined ratio that fell over 18-points to 102.20.

? State Farm Fire & Casualty improved 14-points to 90.57.

! ? Chubb's Federal Insurance had a 12.88-point improvement to 82.70.

The report notes that AIG saw the most improvement of the top-10 with a 16.15 point

!drop to 101.27.

And the top-10 pretty much stayed the same this year compared to last with the only change being a trade of spots nine and 10 between USAA Insurance and Farmers

!Insurance Group.

In terms of growth, the top-100 companies grew 4.3% in net premiums written to $422.4 billion. The average growth in the top five groups -- State Farm, Berkshire Hathaway,

!Allstate, Liberty Mutual, Travelers -- hit 3.7%.

USAA Insurance -- #10 last year -- 11% improvement
