Throughout this course, six units will be covered: narrative writing, accounts told in different mediums, analyzing two mediums, delineating & evaluating argument and seminal U.S. documents, argumentative writing, and transforming source material, all with a strong focus on meaningful communication and literary texts.Textbooks: Elements of Literature and Elements of Language, Third Course – Holt, Rhinehart, and WinstonPaperbacks: Students will read approximately one novel per quarter in class. Novels will be selected from the Guilford County Schools approved book list. This includes, but is not limited to, Animal Farm, Romeo and Juliet and To Kill a Mockingbird. Materials Needed: Black bound notebook (Daybook)Glue sticksPaperPencils, Pens (black or blue)Jump Drive/Flash DriveHighlightersIndex CardsSticky NotesTissues/Hand sanitizer for classroomRequired Projects/Assignments: Daily attendance, cooperation, and participation are ESSENTIAL for students to become involved in the learning process. Accountability, contributing when needed, sharing with others, listening & delivering oral response to the literature selections are essential aspects of class participation.Assignments which are illegible will not be graded and must be recopied. These assignments will be considered late, and if they are not recopied, you will not receive credit. Neatness counts!You can expect one independent reading project each quarter.Grading Policy: All graded assignments will be kept on file, but students are encouraged to keep a log of their graded work. Students will be informed of their grades and missing assignments, but ultimately it is the students’ responsibility. In order to be promoted to English II AND in order to graduate high school, you must score a 70 or higher in the class.Grading Scale:93-100: A85-92: B77-84: C70-77: DBelow 70: FTests/Projects/Papers – 35%; Quizzes – 20%; Classwork – 35%; Homework – 10%Parent CommunicationParent communication is CRUCIAL to ensure student success. The most effective method of communication with me is e-mail. Please let me know any and all questions and concerns you have so that we may work together to help everyone succeed. Also, please make sure you are registered on the Parent Assistance site, so you can monitor the grades of your young adult.Assessments: Students will be assessed based on the following:-Tests/Projects-Computer based assignments-Quizzes-Writing Assignments-Classwork/Homework/Group work-Warm-UpsComputer Access on a weekly basis (at least) is REQUIRED for this class. Please see me if there is a concern so we can set up time in the media center to make this available. Remember, public libraries provide this access as well. There is also access to the 300 Project Lab after school each day.Homework Policy: Homework is an integral part of the curriculum. Students may be required to complete daily assignments outside of the classroom, and they also may be asked to complete work that was not finished during the regular class period. All assignments must be completed and turned in by the due date to receive full credit. LATE WORK (assignments that are not turned in when I ask for them) will be accepted until up to one week after it is originally due with a reduction of 10 points each day late.MAKE-UP WORK – Students are required to submit make-up work for EXCUSED absences within three school days. Work must be presented within three days of the student’s return to school. Bring a doctor’s note OR a note written by a parent or guardian that explains the reason for the absence. Otherwise it is considered unexcused and you will continue to lose a letter grade each day that assignment is not completed. Parent signature forms will also need to be attached to each make up assignment (See student handbook for school-wide make-up work policy)Attendance/Tardy Policy: See student handbook for attendance/tardy policies.Page Honor Code: See student handbook for honor code. All submitted work must be the original work of the student. ?This includes essays, reports, homework, quizzes, and tests. ?If you use an outside source in a paper, you must use MLA citations. ?Sparknotes, Cliff’s Notes and similar internet supplements should not be used as a substitute for reading assigned texts.?If a student it caught cheating on a assignment, he/she will receive a zero on the assignment.? Students who are found to be plagiarizing essays or other written assignments will also be given a zero on the assignment.?Behavioral Expectations: It is imperative that you know what is expected of you in this class, and being respectful and responsible are at the top of those expectations. Ultimately, respect for me, yourself, your classmates, and all property is a MUST. You will be given a classroom behavior expectations document to sign and return.You should be in your seat, prepared with pencils sharpened and any other necessary materials before the tardy bell. Homework should be turned in when entering class, and you should begin your warm-up EVERYDAY by the time the tardy bell rings.Failure to comply with the dress code will prevent you from entering or remaining in the classroom.ALL electronic devices should be turned off and put away while in class. Be sure you review the school policies regarding electronic devices as they will be strictly enforced.Students are expected to arrive to class on time and remain until class ends. Do not stand in the doorway. Handle all of your business (restroom, locker, etc.) BEFORE you enter. Once you are in the room, you are IN.I dismiss the class, not the bell. Remain seated until I tell you to leave. I may have a final announcement to share before you leave. I will be respectful of your time as long as you are respectful of mine.You will receive four bathroom passes per quarter that you may use during independent work time. You may not leave the room during the first or last 10 minutes of class per school policy.You are not up or talking while I am giving direct instruction. If I’m talking, you are not. Side conversations should not become an issue e each day with a positive attitude and try your best. We’ll have a great year if you are willing to help make it one! ................
