There is a three-phase analysis in this paper; the first phase is the career research process, discovering the industry trends that may impact the careers and paths, and specific roles in organizations. The second phase is the assessment process, determining what opportunities are available for someone with my strengths and background taking into consideration the skills, and knowledge I have develop throughout my college experience, and my future learning goals. The third part is career, and career path; analyzing all the data’s’ and establishing a career plan. The result from this paper demonstrates the different area of applications for operations management. Moreover, it will highlight the knowledge and skills needed in order to pursue a career in operations management. In gathering all the necessary facts for operations management, I am able to conduct a process analysis and lay out a career plan for myself. IntroductionThis paper will illustrate my research and assessment about my chosen career, which is Operations management. Operations management functions in production of goods and services. Over the years, business industry has acknowledge that operations managers are capable of working in varying application, and are not limited to warehouse and supply chain industry. In this paper, I will highlight my research findings and assess my knowledge and skills in conjunction with the job opportunities for operations management. In addition, I will present my own chosen career path and future learning goals. ResearchAccording to the Bureau of Labor and Statistics, General and Operations mangers, plan, direct, or coordinate the operations of public or private sector organizations. Duties and responsibilities include formulating policies, managing daily operations, and planning the use of materials and human resources, but are too diverse and general in nature to be classified in any one functional area of management or administration, such as personnel, purchasing, or administrative services. The estimated median earning potential for operations manager is $45.88 hourly and $98,440 annually. I provided a table below to show a brief summary of possible earning and percentage of employment within several industries. The table shows the top paying industry is Securities and commodities exchanges with a possible annual mean wage of $199, 900; however, it has the lowest rate of employment. Operations manager - focuses on optimizing general corporate infrastructure by monitoring and changing the work environment, vendor selection, supply chain management, real estate and budgets.Materials Manager - stores a product through all phases from production to finished goods, shipping between departments, and transportation to distribution centers, warehouses, and customers.Purchasing Manager - Buys the goods and services, raw materials, and supplies required by the firm for its operation.Industrial Production Manager - Coordinates the activities of production departments of manufacturing firms.Operations Research Analyst - Decides on the best allocation of resources within an organization or system.Quality Assurance Manager - Works on the prevention of product deficiencies through prevention, detection, and correction.Facilities Coordinator - Designs the physical environment of a company. Work on building design, furniture and associated equipment.Logistics Manager - Responsible for supply chain management in a key area of the corporation. The main field which operations management is concentrated on is managing the sources directly taking share in product manufacturing or providing a service by the organization. People, materials, technologies and information usually represent sources. A combined number of processes can be used for acquiring an organization primary service or a product. Operations management can be understood as a transformation process in which inputs (resources) are by means of this process transformed into outputs (products or services) (Horváthová, P). AssessmentI created a radial cycle to show the relationship to a central idea, and to show how individual parts form a whole. I listed the middle circle, as the core skills and the outside circles counter clockwise, from the top as the highest level of skill, to high level, and the circle to the left as medium level. The levels when combined together, supports the strong core skills that I have learned in my degree, and are necessary for a career in operations management. My core classes in Southwestern College have provided me knowledge and skills that are beneficial to my chosen career. For example in my Operations management I and II classes, I learned about detailed investigation of planning and scheduling strategies that are applicable to a broad range of business situations and an introduction to simulation. My organizational management class taught me how to examine individual and group behavior within the context of the organizational design and culture. In addition, I gained theoretical and practical knowledge for understanding topics such as motivation, leadership, management decision-making, group process, and conflict resolution. I created a table to show a brief summary of a job opening for operations manager .I selected three main industries, Supply Chain, Finance, and Health and Management. In glancing at the table, it is apparent that all area of applications requires a Bachelor’s degree and several years of experience. The knowledge and skills requirements are quite similar to the core skills, showcased in the radial cycle. In the beginning process of the career research project, my mind was set on operations manager as my target career; however, in researching the supply chain career opportunities, I discovered possible career paths ranging from the support to the executive level. ConclusionOperations Management is the core of any organization. The process involves, producing goods, quality control, quality management, managing the supply chain, facilities management, product formulation and design, ordering of goods, warehousing of goods, contacting vendors, purchasing of external products. The several positions found under operations management require excellent communication skills, high problem solving and analytical skills, and the ability to lead. In addition, it is essential skills to be familiar with ethical rules and guidelines, be able to quickly adapt to changes, and have the self-confidence to manage and communicate with people. I can conclude that both my personal, professional and educational experience have given me the knowledge and skills necessary to meet the qualifications for a career in operations management. My short-term goal is to acquire a materials manager position in a company that will value the knowledge and skills I learned thru my studies.
