RICHY WERENSKI: Hey, guys. I'm Richy Werenski. Welcome to my home in West Palm Beach, Florida. This is "Inside the PGA Tour."

00:00:11:13

RICHY WERENSKI: Ever since I was a little kid, I just liked going fast, doing stuff outside, and doing stuff with my hands. It's a release. I enjoy interacting with the cars. I'm not saying I'm the best driver in the world. But it's fun.

00:00:28:10

RICHY WERENSKI: This is my baby. It's a 2018 Silverado 2500 Duramax Diesel. It's pretty awesome right now. Check the inside out. Black-on-black, obviously. In Florida the, uh, black interior gets kind of hot. And I've flipped the seats up and you can fit a ton of stuff back there. That's where I put my clubs most of the time.

00:00:47:27

RICHY WERENSKI: My first car was a truck with a huge lip on it and stupid tires, you know. It was way im--super-impractical.

00:00:56:01

RICHY WERENSKI: Funny story about this one, I got this in Kentucky at the Barbasol. A couple of guys, actually, on--on Tour said, "Man, you should buy a car every week." I said, "Don't tell me that. I--I might." But, uh, yeah. So maybe it's a little bit of a--a good luck charm.

00:01:11:25

NARRATOR: This is "Inside the PGA Tour." [music]

00:01:19:21

NARRATOR: The Tour returns to Vegas this week, where third-year Tour member Richy Werenski aims to crank up his 2018-19 season.

00:01:30:02

FEMALE: Tell me, who is Richy Werenski?

00:01:33:18

RICHY WERENSKI: Oh, man. I don't know. I don't know. I mean, I'm just this guy from Massachusetts, a southern New England redneck, I guess you could say. [laugh]

00:01:45:00

RICHY WERENSKI: I started playing golf when I really young. Both of my parents played golf. We had golf clubs around the house. I picked one up. And ever since I was four years old, I probably have been golfing.

00:01:56:01

NARRATOR: The New England boy went on to embrace his Southern soul at Georgia Tech. And after graduating in 2014, found himself making strides in the professional world.

00:02:05:24

RICHY WERENSKI: My first year on the Web, I got through Q School. And came in 79th on the Money List. Went out the next season and finished 2nd on the Money List. That's kind of when I knew that I definitely had the game.

00:02:17:23

NARRATOR: In those two seasons on the Tour Werenski captured 11 Top 25s, three runner-ups, and capped his last season with a win. [cheering]

00:02:28:10

ANNOUNCER: Happy days for Richy. He wins the BMW Charity Pro-Am.

00:02:33:10

MALE: He's one of those steady, consistent players who, when he's hitting it well, can have some really good weeks.

00:02:39:21

RICHY WERENSKI: I'm really trying to get to be where I'm more consistent, where every time I tee it up, I'm just a lot better golfer.

00:02:44:26

ANNOUNCER: Well, Richy Werenski giving us a foreshadowing of his ability to compete. [clapping]

00:02:51:00

NARRATOR: Through two PGA Tour seasons, he's racked up a pair of runner-up finishes and qualified for the First Round of the FedEx Cup Playoffs each season. [club swing]

00:03:01:14

RICHY WERENSKI: I think I'm really close to winning. I know my game is way better than it was the last two years, which is huge. That gives me more confidence.

00:03:08:26

NARRATOR: With his game in fine position, he's given himself a bonus along the way.

00:03:14:00

RICHY WERENSKI: So I was trying to reward myself, you know, for keeping my card, you know, the first year. And I was, like, "Okay. I'm gonna get something nice." [music]

00:03:24:16

RICHY WERENSKI: This is my 2017 BMW M-4. It's got this white interior, which I really like. And I got a lot of exhaust work done. I'll show you guys what it sounds like real quick. [engine revs] A little throaty. A little bit better than stock, anyways.

00:03:40:02

RICHY WERENSKI: This color is, uh, [word] orange, is what they call it. Then I got the carbon fiber roof, the wheels. This is the competition package.

00:03:48:07

RICHY WERENSKI: And I don't take it out as much as I--as I would like. But it's definitely one of my favorites.

00:03:53:21

RICHY WERENSKI: And then this one is a 2017 Shelby Mustang GT 350. Unbelievable car. I like the racing stripes. It's got the black wheels on there. Just a mean-looking car, in general.

00:04:07:11

RICHY WERENSKI: One of my sponsors got the Mustang. And I was, like, "Oh, man. I love that car. And he said, "If you Top 10, I'll sell it to you." And I haven't--I finished tied for 10th. And I bought it the next day.

00:04:17:02

RICHY WERENSKI: I'll show you guys the inside. We got sport seats in here, which I actually really like. Really comfortable. They hug you pretty well.

00:04:23:25

RICHY WERENSKI: It's a driver's car. And that's kind of why I got this. So it's fun.

00:04:28:07

RICHY WERENSKI: All right. These are my rides. Hope you guys enjoyed it.

00:04:31:09

NARRATOR: Still ahead--

00:04:33:04

RICHY WERENSKI: Gonna do a little driving. Gonna go down here at Palm Beach International Raceway and check out this road course.

00:04:40:16

NARRATOR: But first--

00:04:41:16

MALE: One thing that we know is that whatever people produce on training, they don't just magically produce more on the golf course. So we have to see the numbers we want here for him to see the numbers he wants on the golf course.

00:04:53:01

NARRATOR: As the Fall portion of the PGA Tour season winds towards the RSM Classic, the $500,000 "Birdies for Love" charity program has been heating up. [clapping]

00:05:03:25

MALE: The player who accumulates the most birdies or better throughout the Fall tournaments will make a $300,000 donation to an organization on their behalf. $150,000 for the person who finishes 2nd. And $50,000 for the person who finishes 3rd.

00:05:17:23

MALE: It gives us this very unique opportunity to contribute into our communities, but have the players directly involved and support our various charities.

00:05:26:00

NARRATOR: And currently, the competition is a tight one, as Chez Realie and Emiliano Grillo are tied at the top with 72 birdies or better this season. Coming in just behind the Top Two is Brandt Snedeker, just four back. All the Top 5 fall within just 10 of the lead.

00:05:42:00

ANNOUNCER: J.B. Holmes with a lot of birdies so far.

00:05:45:15

NARRATOR: And with the $300,000 to the winner's charity of choice, the intensity will only increase, with just three events remaining.

00:05:52:20

MALE: I look forward to posting the Leaderboards. And, you know, the chance to come together at the Classic, to announcing the winners at the end of the Classic, and getting out to the charities, and making a donation.

00:06:06:01

NARRATOR: Time to take a trip around the Tours and see who ended up in the Winner's Circle.

00:06:10:28

NARRATOR: On the PGA Tour Champions, Scott Parel took home his second win in two months at the Invesco QQQ Championship, moving him to 2nd in the Charles Schwab Cup Standings. [clapping]

00:06:22:06

ANNOUNCER: Scott Parel has captured the second stop in the Charles Schwab Cup Playoffs.

00:06:27:12

SCOTT PAREL: Just for me to be able to get there as fast as I did is just a great accomplishment. And it's [indistinct], and hopefully, stay out there for a long time.

00:06:34:13

NARRATOR: Just a month removed from the Tour Championship, Cameron Champ led the field in driving distance and carded 28 birdies on his way to his first career PGA Tour victory at the Sanderson Farms Championship. [cheers]

00:06:47:16

ANNOUNCER: Cameron Champ is a first-time champ on the PGA Tour. [clapping]

00:06:53:08

ANNOUNCER: This is a fellow only 25 years old. And he's got a big game. He's gonna be around for a very long time.

00:07:00:13

NARRATOR: Capturing his first World Golf Championship at the WGC HSBC Champions, Xander Schauffele posted the lowest score on Sunday, highlighted by birdieing the final three holes. [cheers and clapping]

00:07:11:01

XANDER SCHAUFFELE: It just feels good to win again. You do everything you can to get in this position, and it honestly is a great feeling to--to pull it off. [clapping]

00:07:20:08

NARRATOR: Schauffele's third career victory at Shanghai vaults him to the top of the FedEx Cup Standings for the first time in his career. And for the second straight season, the Asia swing was full of excitement beyond the course.

00:07:34:17

NARRATOR: Kicking off the Asian swing in Malaysia for the CIMB Classic, Defending Champ Pat Perez went treasure-hunting.

00:07:41:11

PAT PEREZ: What do you want to buy? Have you got any cash? That's exactly it. I'm lost in Chinatown. I mean, you could get lost in here. It's pretty cool. What's up, my man? How are we doing tonight, Baby?

00:07:52:23

PAT PEREZ: I'm only gonna buy one thing in this whole place, and it's from you because I like you.

00:07:57:01

MALE: Thank you.

00:07:57:12

PAT PEREZ: You're the best.

00:07:58:00

PAT PEREZ: I came, I saw, I conquered. I can't get over it. [music]

00:08:06:03

NARRATOR: While Perez experienced the sights and sounds of the city, two-time CIMB Classic Winner Justin Thomas was making a new friend at TPC Kuala Lumpur.

00:08:16:03

JUSTIN THOMAS: Hey, this is my caddy, Jimmy. What do you think? 6-iron? [club swing]

00:08:21:12

JUSTIN THOMAS: Do you want to play this hole with us, son, you can help me out. [club swing] That's all right. You can get that one up and down. You left it in the perfect spot. [club swing]

00:08:30:29

JUSTIN THOMAS: That's what I'm talking about. Nice shot, there, bud.

00:08:35:15

JUSTIN THOMAS: Ooh. That was a good putt. It didn't break for you.

00:08:39:15

JUSTIN THOMAS: All right, come on. I need this so I can get the signed ball from Aiden.

00:08:41:29

JUSTIN THOMAS: Yes! I'm gonna sell it on "E-bay."

00:08:44:05

JUSTIN THOMAS: I'll sign one for you.

00:08:45:25

AIDEN: All right.

00:08:50:09

NARRATOR: After Marc Leishman hoisted the CIMB Classic trophy in the Malaysia, the Tour then traveled over 2600 miles to Jeju Island, South Korea for the CJ Cup at Nine Bridges. Danny Willett took in the heritage and culture of the island.

00:09:05:16

DANNY WILLETT: Jeju's volcanic rocks are used to carve out these local one-of-a-kind sculptures. [Korean], which literally means, "stone old man," has been a symbol of protection.

00:09:16:08

DANNY WILLETT: Isn't it fat, this one? [laugh]

00:09:19:14

FEMALE: So he's tiny. He's all right.

00:09:22:11

NARRATOR: While the Englishman explored Jeju's Stone Park, Brooks Koepka was enjoying the local cuisine and finding adventures of his own.

00:09:29:24

BROOKS KOEPKA: The fishing off Jeju Island is absolutely incredible. There's so many different types of fish.

00:09:34:03

BROOKS KOEPKA: Oh, I think I got one. Yeah, baby.

00:09:38:01

BROOKS KOEPKA: There we go. That's what I'm talking about.

00:09:41:04

NARRATOR: Koepka explored and conquered Jeju Island [cheers], claiming the CJ Cup and Nine Bridges title.

00:09:48:18

NARRATOR: Next stop, the first World Golf Championship of the season in Shanghai, China. And some players traded clubs for badminton racquets, including Defending Champion Justin Rose.

00:10:01:11

JUSTIN ROSE: It's a definite different feeling sport. The [indistinct] of it is definitely quite tricky to pick up. I probably haven't held a badminton racquet in my hand for probably 15 years.

00:10:12:12

JUSTIN ROSE: It took me a little while to get going there. But sort of rediscovered my feel for it.

00:10:17:16

GOLFER: HSBC, I think they--they do a great job, always doing something different. It's fun. I've never played badminton before. So I--I definitely need to practice a little bit.

00:10:26:05

JUSTIN ROSE: Obviously, such a huge sport here in China, to showcase golf in a way, you know, playing a sport that they love so much over here was pretty cool.

00:10:35:08

NARRATOR: Three Champions were crowned in Asia. The final, Xander Schauffele after battling the best at Sheshan Golf Club.

00:10:42:09

NARRATOR: Taking unique experiences in each culture with them, the Tour bid farewell to Asia until 2019.

00:10:53:01

ANNOUNCER: Once the "Can't-Miss Kid." Now he's a winner on the PGA Tour, Patrick Cantlay wins in the desert.

00:11:01:00

NARRATOR: The PGA Tour heads to Vegas for the Shriners Hospitals for Children Open. Last year, under uncharacteristically difficult conditions at TPC Summerlin, Patrick Cantlay outlasted Germany's Alex Cejka and South Korea's Whee Kim to capture his first PGA Tour win. [cheers]

00:11:17:07

PATRICK CANTLAY: The whole week had been windy. And then the wind really kicked up the last four or five holes. I think it was the highest score that won around that golf course.

00:11:24:25

PATRICK CANTLAY: I played really well. Made a bunch of putts when I needed to. And it was sigh of relief, you know, making par and--and winning at last.

00:11:32:04

NARRATOR: Cantlay added his name to the list of players that have won for the first time in Vegas. In the tournament's 35-year history, the desert course has crowned 12 first-time winners. The tournament also provided of excitement. Nine of the last ten tournaments have been decided by two strokes or less, including three playoffs.

00:11:54:17

FEMALE: Oh, it's over. It's over.

00:11:56:25

ANNOUNCER: Unbelievable.

00:11:59:20

NARRATOR: TPC Summerlin is familiar with red numbers.

00:12:03:26

NARRATOR: Since 2008, the average winning score is 20 under par. So low scores are a must.

00:12:10:28

GOLFER: It's one of the best finishes in all of golf. You finish with a drivable par-4. You got a reachable par-5, a really good par-3. And then 18th hole is a pretty solid par-4.

00:12:20:29

GOLFER: You can go from a few back to right in it by making eagles and birdies.

00:12:26:02

NARRATOR: An elite field makes the trip this year, including five of the Top 10 in the FedEx Cup Standings, 66 Tour winners, with a combined 223 wins. Among them, Jordan Spieth, who makes his first career start at the Shriner's Hospitals for Children Open.

00:12:44:28

NARRATOR: And this week's "One-and-Done Pick" has plenty of experience in Vegas.

00:12:51:09

NARRATOR: Ryan Moore, a product of UNLV, where he was a four-time All-American, enters the week ranked 10th in the FedEx Cup Standings. Thanks to a runner-up finish at the Safeway Open, he looks to continue building momentum and grab his first win since the 2016 John Deere Classic. Moore, who calls Las Vegas his home, has tasted success at TPC Summerlin. He's posted four Top-15 finishes, including a win in 2012, where he finished 24 under par.

00:13:21:11

RYAN MOORE: I know where to hit it. I know where to miss it. I know what the putts are gonna do. And I mean, I've just got a lot of confidence.

00:13:27:29

NARRATOR: Moore aims to grab the top spot in the FedEx Cup Standings with only three events remaining in the Fall. Since the 2013-14 season, the top-ranked player after the Fall has always qualified for the Tour Championship.

00:13:41:03

NARRATOR: Coming up--

00:13:42:18

RICHY WERENSKI: I just want to drive. It's been a long time since I've been on a race track, so I'm really itching.

00:13:46:25

MALE: We see a lot of this in golfers. A lot of pro golfers will come out. And they really have a knack for this.

00:13:54:02

NARRATOR: Time to go "Inside the Numbers."

00:13:59:18

NARRATOR: As the Tour rolls into Vegas for the Shriners for Hospitals Children Open, "Inside" has the picks for your Fantasy Lineups.

00:14:08:29

ANNOUNCER: What a way to finish. Webb Simpson.

00:14:12:25

NARRATOR: 2013 Champion Webb Simpson makes his 2018-19 season debut at TPC Summerlin, where he's continued showing his affinity, carding the most birdies since that win.

00:14:23:09

ANNOUNCER: Kevin Na breaks through on the PGA Tour.

00:14:27:02

NARRATOR: Another past Champion, Kevin Na, comes to his hometown event off a second Tour win last season, and a Top 25 recently at the CIMB Classic. He also finished 2nd here two years ago.

00:14:39:05

ANNOUNCER: Kevin Tway has his career-altering moment.

00:14:43:08

NARRATOR: Coming into Vegas after earning his first title in Napa, Kevin Tway sits 4th in the FedEx Cup Standings and ranks 5th in Strokes Gained Tee-to-Green, which nine of the last ten winners have finished the week in the Top 10.

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:15:09:00

RICHY WERENSKI: All right. Now we're gonna go over to the golf course, see my coach, Michael, and, uh, go work on some drills.

00:15:14:06

NARRATOR: For Richy Werenski, practice is not about pounding balls on the range. For him, it's quality over quantity. Every ball counts, literally. He and his coach, Mike Robinson, have a very unique practice regimen, one based strictly on statistics from ShotLink.

00:15:31:00

MIKE ROBINSON: Since we have all of Richy's shots that he hit on Tour due to ShotLink data, I'm able to take his year-end stats, and I can put it into an algorithm we've created. And it gives me a really good insight as to how he makes up his score.

00:15:43:14

MIKE ROBINSON: All right, Rich. We're gonna start with your numbers, your wedge numbers, 50 to 125. Then we'll go ahead and test them 50 to 75, 75 to 100. Then we'll do a little work on your putting.

00:15:55:02

RICHY WERENSKI: All right. Let's go.

00:15:57:22

MIKE ROBINSON: Let's go get it done.

00:15:58:19

RICHY WERENSKI: We need to improve 75 to 150. Since I don't hit it, like, I'm not one of the longest guys on Tour, I have that yardage a lot.

00:16:07:06

RICHY WERENSKI: Am I moving off it at all? Or does it look okay?

00:16:08:09

MIKE ROBINSON: Nope. That looks good.

00:16:09:15

RICHY WERENSKI: If I can hit from those yardages and have a pretty good opportunity of birdieing it 50 percent of the time, that's definitely one of our goals.

00:16:17:18

MIKE ROBINSON: Yardage control is--it's spot-on, absolutely spot-on.

00:16:22:01

RICHY WERENSKI: Now it's, like, I can hit shots that I couldn't have hit before. And that's why it's huge having that EVC and the stats. I mean, it's just, you know where you need to get better.

00:16:31:07

MIKE ROBINSON: That's it.

00:16:31:12

RICHY WERENSKI: All right, let's go.

00:16:32:06

MIKE ROBINSON: Let's do it.

00:16:33:28

RICHY WERENSKI: Putting is a goal we need to improve. I know we have to get better outside of 10 feet.

00:16:37:28

MIKE ROBINSON: When he hits a good shot in there, it's gonna fall between 10 and 15 feet. So if we can get his 10 to 15 foot putting up to about 32, 33 percent, instead of 29.5, it should have a really good influence on his score. He's right around Tour average, from 4 to 8 and 10 to 15 feet, we want to see a little bit of a gain this next week, because, uh, he's gonna start hitting it closer.

00:16:58:09

MIKE ROBINSON: I'm not telling him he has to go out and be the best putter ever. I need Richy to be two percent, three percent better from a couple of different areas. And through our algorithm, I can show him what's that worth to his scoring average. As the scoring average comes down, his FedEx rank gets better, and then he earns more money.

00:17:11:28

RICHY WERENSKI: We've realized you really don't need to get that much better at certain areas to have a--a nice jump in FedEx Cup Rank.

00:17:18:08

MIKE ROBINSON: He wrapped up his first season on Tour in right around 106th. So this year, our goal is to come in 70th. And we have a plan on how to do that. And we just have to stick to the plan and keep training hard.

00:17:29:01

NARRATOR: Richy teed it up for the time this season at the Safeway Open. And with Michael alongside as his caddy, Richy canned 5 of 12 putts in the 10-to-15-feet range, or 41.67 percent. That's nearly ten percent above their targeted goal.

00:17:45:05

RICHY WERENSKI: Obviously, I want to, you know, be ranked Number 1 in the world, like, win the FedEx Cup. But it's--it's incremental. You know, we don't have to do that right away.

00:17:57:15

NARRATOR: Time now for this week's "Must-See Moment."

00:18:02:11

NARRATOR: This week's "Moment" comes from the final round of the WGC HSBC Champions, where Thomas Peters holed out for an ace on the par-3 12th. [cheers and clapping]

00:18:14:01

ANNOUNCER: Golf at its best.

[COMMERCIAL BREAK]

00:18:26:05

GOLFER: I think when I was 11, I had the--the black Nike hat, the red Nike shirt, walking around. I pretty sure we know who that is. [chuckle]

00:18:34:19

GOLFER: I think back in the day when I was pretty young, yeah, probably Tiger Woods. I was actually doing Spieth, sorry. My girlfriend was his caddy. Everyone thought we were Jordan Spieth. So I was signing autographs all night. [evil laugh]

00:18:47:29

GOLFER: Maybe a dragon. You gotta make him look scary, though.

00:18:50:26

GOLFER: Thoroughly into my pumpkin.

00:18:52:25

GOLFER: Well, now I'm a PGA Tour member. So probably the PGA Tour logo.

00:18:55:26

GOLFER: Maybe a little Georgia-Florida, um, inspired pumpkin.

00:19:04:16

GOLFER: Oh! All of them. All of them.

00:19:07:12

GOLFER: Any fruity candy for me. Swedish Fish or Sour Patch Kids.

00:19:11:07

GOLFER: Just a regular, uh, M&M, that's as good as it gets for me.

00:19:19:05

GOLFER: Sam Burns and I would be tearing up something. We've kind of gotten into wine lately. So maybe I'll be, like, a cork, and he'll be a wine bottle.

00:19:26:05

GOLFER: Maybe me and Stephan Jaeger can be, like, Mario and Luigi, or something. But, you know, dibs on Luigi. Sorry Stephan.

00:19:32:19

GOLFER: Harold Varner, maybe we can go as the [word] team from, like, "Rush Hour." Y'all could take it how you want. [laugh]

00:19:47:08

RICHY WERENSKI: Gonna do a little driving. Gonna go down here to Palm Beach International Raceway and check out this road course. [car engine roaring]

00:19:53:18

RICHY WERENSKI: We're gonna have fun. We've got a good instructor. And he's gonna teach me a little bit, hopefully. And hopefully, we can get around the track pretty quick.

00:19:59:25

NARRATOR: Richy Werenski's love for cars shows in more than his own lineup, as he took some time recently to get some hands-on experience at the track near his home.

00:20:09:28

MALE: You ready?

00:20:10:17

RICHY WERENSKI: Yeah, I'm ready.

00:20:13:13

MALE: I do a lot of coaching for a lot of potential race car drivers or new people that want to experience it. With Richy, he's had some experience, so that helps a little bit. There's some different techniques for different types of turns here. We just go through all of the turns and all the drills.

00:20:30:22

RICHY WERENSKI: It's been a long time since I've been on a race track. So I'm really itching.

00:20:33:27

MALE: You want to push it up?

00:20:35:00

RICHY WERENSKI: Yeah.

00:20:39:00

MALE: Okay. Now give it gas, because you'll be able to catch him on the straight.

00:20:44:08

MALE: Nice and tight here. Perfect. Very good. All the way out. Good job. Hammer down. That's the way you want to hit it.

00:20:56:11

MALE: A lot of pro golfers will come out. And they really have a knack for this. I think it's just the concentration level it takes just to be one-on-one and block things out.

00:21:06:00

MALE: You did fantastic.

MALE: Yeah. I would love to have him back. He can stay if he wants. [chuckle]
