GETTING TO KNOW A CANADIAN ECOZONE

HALL OF FAME TRADING CARDS

Purpose: Show of your research skills and showcase one of Canada's beautiful ecozones.

Task: One of the best ways to do this is to create a HALL OF FAME TRADING CARD that will showcase the unique features of the ecozone and provide important information on the natural and human systems in the region.

Steps:

1. Complete the “Let's Look at Canada's Ecozones” worksheet.

2. Choose an ecozone from a hat to research:

a. Pacific Maritime Ecozone –pp.32-35

b. The Boreal Shield Ecozone – pp. 36-39

c. The Mixedwood Plain Ecozone – pp.40-43

d. The Atlantic Maritime Ecozone – pp. 44-47

e. The Northern Arctic Ecozone – pp. 48-51

3. Complete the “Researching your Ecozone” worksheet using the appropriate pages in the textbook. You will be looking at both the natural and human systems in your ecozone. This will be the first round of research that will be completed.

4. Conduct further research on your ecozone. Add this either to the back of your “Researching your Ecozone” handout.

5. Create your HALL OF FAME TRADING CARD. The front will be visuals with a title and a catchy slogan.

6. Complete the ecozone write-up on the back of your trading card.

7. Prepare a 3-5 minute presentation that will highlight the important and unique features of your ecozone.

Assignment Elements:

1.) Information on the FRONT of your Trading Card:

The front of your trading card will be in the form of a collage. You will find pictures which can be used to illustrate the appearance of your ecozone. You will later use this visual for your presentation.

Also the front of your trading card must also include:

– Name of Ecozone

– Catchy slogan to entice people to want to go to your ecozone

– Map of Canada with your ecozone highlighted

You can include pictures of:

– Physical Features (landforms, climate, vegetation, wildlife)

– Human Features (recreational activities/tourism, jobs, resource use, major cities)

– Additional images that show the problems faced by the natural environment because of human influence or natural changes

2. Information for the BACK of your Trading Card:

The back of your Trading Care will include the information you have obtained through researching. When the person reads this information the images on the front should be explained and the viewer will know what your ecozone is all about and its importance in Canada.

The Write-Up Information (these should be written in complete sentences):

– What is an ecozone?

– Why is the ecozone important?

– What types of landforms will you see?

– What type of natural resources are found in the ecozone? What is their importance (think about the amount of money made from them, number of people working in that industry, etc)?

– What are some of the main human activities in the ecozone? What is their importance?

– What are some of the environmental issues facing your ecozone? What is the impact?

– At least two other interesting facts about your ecozone.

The Stats (these should be written as points):

– major cities found in the ecozone

– type of climate in ecozone

– type of vegetation in ecozone

– wildlife in ecozone

– any other interesting stats you come across
