THOUGHTS FOR THE JOURNEY

"What News are You Getting????"

When I was up at Luther Academy of the Rockies, the discussion one morning got on the subject of staying hopeful. One of the participants stepped up to the microphone and said, "There are two newsfeeds in my life. One is obvious; it's out there on my Twitter feed, in the news headlines, in the trending topics ? and its always hatred and division. If I look at that newsfeed, I definitely want to give up."

The man continued, "But if I turn my gaze down and see the world that's right in front of me; in my local community and where I live and work, I can always find good news and inspirational people and reasons to be hopeful."

You can probably identify with this person's response. If you take even a few moments to inventory your neighborhood, to think about the really neat things happening in Arlington, or Grand Prairie, or Mansfield, or Ft. Worth, or to list the names and faces of people you know who are doing the difficult, thankless, necessary work of compassion and justice in these places ? you probably have more than enough fuel to keep going.

Today, the most life-affirming, hope-giving thing you might do ? is to logoff, step into the world right outside your door, and dwell on what you see for a little while. Perhaps even share what you see there when you return to social media. Build a better newsfeed for you and for all of us today!

Peace,

Pastor Joel
