Culminating Activity – One Month Cross-Canada Trip

Canada Ecozone Amazing Race Name:____________________

Canadian Geography CGC 1P1 (APPLIED) December 5/ 6, 2016

Introduction

The Amazing Race Canada is a reality television competition series that features teams in a grueling race across Canada. Based on what you have learned since September, create your own race across Canada. You can start anywhere and end up anywhere, as long as you visit at least 4 different ecozones.

Your trip should be realistic, in the sense that someone could actually follow the suggested travel route and sightseeing locations (completing a trip across Canada in 4-5 days visiting all the stops would NOT be realistic. Be sure to allow for travel time and resting at night). You are to plan a stop in 4 of the 15 ecozones. You need to visit at least:

• 1 of Canada’s 6 largest cities

• 1 of Canada’s Territories

• 1 National Park*

* The list of National Parks can be found at

Tasks

Create a Trip Booklet with a travel itinerary that details the stops you make on a trip across Canada. The booklet will include a title page, the ecozone map of your route, 4 ecozone templates, 4 journal entries and illustrations of each of the places you visit. I have posted a Template as a sample on my website and on Academic Workspace that you may use to guide you! It includes an evaluation sheet at the end. I also have a sample of previous work that you may have a look at in class but it is not available for download or copying.

1. Using the blank Ecozone Map provided, draw your route. Label and shade in the 4 ecozones you visit. Identify the largest urban center (largest populated area/city) in each ecozone on your route.

2. Fill in the following template for each location.

|Trip Day Number ____ Location: |

|Ecozone: |Largest urban centre in the ecozone: |

| |Population in 2016: |

|Major form of employment in the ecozone: |

|Next Location: Distance to the next location: |

| |

|Method of travel to the next destination: Time taken to travel to the next location: |

3. In Journal format (first person narrative – “Your” point of view – ‘I’ and ‘we’ etc.), describe what you are seeing in each destination: weather, landscape, vegetation and the built up environment. Choose one season for your travels to all your destinations (ie: July Summer Vacation or two weeks of winter break) and explain what you did during your visit (mountain climbing, skiing, dog-sledding, whale-watching, river-rafting, fishing, etc.)

4. Provide at least 3 visuals or illustrations that represent each destination. They can be photos, sketches and/or paintings. The visuals are to show what the places you visit look like. Show vegetation, landforms, and human activities such as tourist attractions. Cite the website from which you copied each visual. Be sure to remember… IF YOU ARE TRAVELLING IN JULY all pictures should represent SUMMER!

5. Design a title page. Once again, you may use the template I created to get you started.

Working Periods

You will have three class periods to work on this project. I am hoping to arrange one of those periods in the library/computer lab where you can access the computers. The majority of your project can be completed during class time if you use this time wisely. You will need to consult the textbooks, atlas and other resources such as the internet.

Online resources include the following:

Bernhardt, Torsten, Redpath Museum and Canadian Heritage, Canada’s Ecozones on The Canadian Biodiversity Web Site n.d.
