Fly-Fishing Costa Rica: A Presentation by Ken Moser and Bob Smith

By Larry Forte

At our next monthly meeting, we get to take an exciting trip to Costa Rica and learn first hand about the great fly-fishing opportunities available in this beautiful country. Join us on Tuesday, June 9th as we welcome Ken Moser and Bob Smith, 2 guys that have been fishing together for over 20 years. Ken and Bob will present a program about fly-fishing in Costa Rica, including where to go, what you will catch and what equipment you need.

Costa Rica is located between Honduras and Panama. Jutting out into the Pacific Ocean, in the southwest corner of Costa Rica, is the Osa Peninsula. The peninsula encompasses lush primary rainforests and a complex system of freshwater and marine resources. Ken and Bob have experience fishing from Parrot Bay Village, a sport fishing resort located on the peninsula. The resort is a unique sport fishing and rainforest eco-lodge. The fishing opportunities are incredible; fish for Pacific Sailfish, Blue Marlin, Roosterfish, Yellow fin Tuna, Dorado, Jack Cravelles, Bonito, Red Snapper and Caberra Snapper.

To learn more about the area, go to .

Ken started fishing in the mid 1980’s and grew up in Middletown, Maryland. He spent most of his early years fishing Catoctin Creek. Ken is a long time member of Free State Fly Fishers. He is also a recent winner of the Pennsylvania State Fly Tying Championship. Over the years, he has fished throughout Maryland, Florida, some in North Carolina Outer Banks, Hawaii, Belize and Costa Rica.

Bob grew up near the Greenbrier in West Virginia fishing for smallmouth. He too has been a long time member of Free State Fly Fishers, holding many offices in the club. Bob has fished throughout Maryland, Florida, some in North Carolina Outer Banks, Mexico Belize and Costa Rica.

The country is beautiful, the people are fantastic, and the fishing is great. Keep your 2-wts at home because these are big fish.

Outings by David Fulton

If you haven’t been on an outing yet this year, then you have missed some good trips, but the year isn’t over yet. We have some great trips lined up for the rest of 2009. Let’s take a look at what is coming up:

June 6th – Skiltons: The cost is $35.00 per person. There is a limit of 10 people who can go and the slots will be on a first come basis, but don’t let that stop you from signing up because sometimes people have to drop out for various reasons. Bill Wilson is organizing this trip and will be contacting those who have signed up.

July – White Fly Hatch: We will fish the Miller hatch at Packhorse Ford again this year. As with the Shad, we will be at the mercy of the hatch. More details will follow.

August – Small Mouth: We will hit a stream for some summer Smallie action.

September – Striper Trip: We are going to try to put together another trip to the Chesapeake Bay. The trip will be timed with the southerly migration of Stripers as they head to their wintering grounds.

October – North Branch Potomac: We will take another shot at the big browns up there again this year. Here is a chance to use some of what Dan Hodkinson taught us in his presentation at the April meeting.

November – Steelhead: I would like to set up another steelhead outing. The location will be announced later.

December – I’m looking for ideas.

We are also going to try to slip in a float trip on the Monocacy, Antietam, or some other local stream. More information will follow.

If anyone has questions about the scheduled outings, or ideas for new outings, please contact me at: davidfulton@ or (240) 446-3371.

See you at the meeting!

Last Cast by Don Fine

Handling Trout and Other Things

In my small fishing library I find several books on the humor of fishing, one of which is “Fear of Fly Fishing” by Jack Ohman. For a change of pace, part of this month’s Last Cast sarcastically portrays the unethical treatment of the piscine creatures that we fly fishers pursue.

Handling Trout – your trout is subdued. He’s tired, he’s shocked as h--- that the juicy little nymph turned out to be a mouthful of fur and wire, and he’s looking at the net like it’s euthanasia.

Some fly fisherman, not content with just catching a fish, want to examine the trophy before putting it back. They hold it up by the jaw, they lay it on the grass next to their fly rod and have a trout photo op, and they rub their hands all over it, petting it like it was a kitty cat. By this time, the trout is about to say the h--- with it and pass out. Feeling sporting, they’re going to let him go.

After keeping the trout out of the water for a couple of minutes, they put the trout back in (the water), and then wonder why it looks like the Andrea Doria. Or they return the trout to the water, but they give it a heave-ho, as if it needs a little momentum or they’re throwing him for distance, like a javelin.

Though it may give a chuckle to read, unfortunately this passage is far too often true. To paraphrase the words of Lee Wulff, “a fish is too beautiful a creature to be caught just once”.

Now for Other Things

Probably many will know the name of Frank Sawyer, famed river keeper on the Avon River in Southern England and designer of the "pheasant tail nymph". Over the past several years I have enjoyed reading passages from Sawyer’s book, Keeper of the Stream. In the chapter entitled Suspected Parties, Sawyer discusses the delicate balance that exists on a typical stream where insects provide food for fish and birds (e.g. swifts, swallows, martins) and fish in turn provide food for larger birds (e.g. herons, kingfishers, grebes). As a river keeper, Sawyer had to be concerned with keeping the stream relatively free of debris and obstructions without intruding on the habitat and balance of species that were required for a healthy trout population. Such it was that Sawyer, in his later years, gained a great deal of respect for the creatures of the air and their requirements for food and cover. Sawyer notes that birds alone consume an enormous number of insects annually, perhaps to the detriment of the fish population. But yet, he goes on to say "it is not their fault that we have meager stocks of river flies, the fault is ours entirely. Our waters, if perfectly pure and natural, could produce sufficient insects for both fish and birds...." Though written decades ago, Sawyer saw the destruction of habitat, that is so important for the maintenance of a robust insect population, would surely impact both fish and birds along that stream. It is easy to imagine how often our human activities directly impact the creatures that live among us. We pollute, we litter and we allow the destruction of habitat around us. Then we question, why isn't our favorite fishing hole, stream, river, lake or pond the same as it used to be?
